You do not have to upgrade to have an avatar.
Click on the "my stuff' tab at the top of the page. When it loads click on ""manage Photos" above.
Your 4 photos should show up and all  of them will say "Set as Avatar" next to the photo. Click on that button to set that photo as your avatar.
Should be easy, hope I did not make it confusing.
