I just mybought an xritei1 Display calibrator. Did my monitor up, will do my scanner and inkjet some day...

I have a question about the X-Rite MSCCC ColorCheckers you snap on a shoot; Is there a difference between the expensive x-rite versions and the cheapies on amazon? Say the DGK, or cameratrax versions?
I already have a grey card, do I need the color blocks?

I'm a bit fuzzy about how that works.

Thanks!

The grey color box side is neat looking, but I think any source will do.  The color boxes are a bit different, not simple white balance but a color accurate profile.  The different shades and colors allow the software to create a custom import (or adjustment) for dead on accurate color.

Well worth the money if you are shooting things that require exactly color, like trade marked colors for products.  I don't think its as important in say a clothing shoot, where I see colors adjusted by eye more often than not.  Granted that could all depend on the client or designer, it's still very possible for a garment to have  a trade marked color or logo.

Depending on the light sources,  the custom profile unique to your camera is generated and a very accurate profile can be used to adjust all images  using that light source. Sounds like a hassle but crummy color in theaters that use blue, red, and sometimes led lighting can make white balancing very very difficult . At least if you have a profile u might have a chance,
