models paying travelling photographers?
Regularly I get messages from models visiting Holland and asking me if I want to book them for a shoot. Nothing wrong with that off course, but I'm wondering...do any of you MM models ever get messages from photographers visiting your area and asking you if you want to hire them, so: paying them to shoot you? And if so: did you ever? Jul 12 14 11:48 pm Link Two different photographers have done so. I did not shoot with either. Worth noting, I have also never done the opposite. Hitting people up randomly is not part of my business model- I prefer to respond to existing casting calls, or post my own broad ads, for those who wish to read them. Jul 13 14 12:21 am Link I did once a few years back, they were from the US travelling to AUS. I ended up getting ripped off a heap of money and photos/edits so I generally don't work with travelling photographers that require pay any more. Jul 13 14 11:13 am Link Yeah, a few photographers have asked. I didn't. I WOULD for some, but they're special. Jul 13 14 11:17 am Link I have never paid a photographer to shoot with me. Early when I first started modeling, I would shoot with photographers who paid me either for my time or for travel, but recently I've been working with the best people I can find because my goal is killer pictures, not financial profit. I would rather shoot with a kick ass photographer with no money exchanging hands, than shoot with a so-so photographer who pays me $100. Several amazing photos and an expanded professional network = more worth it to me than the cash. The only time I would consider paying someone to shoot with me would be if they were one of the few best photographers I had ever seen . . . and I have pretty high standards. They would have to offer something I flat out cannot get elsewhere, which is tough to do. If I were doing a modeling tour with lots of paid jobs, I might save some money and splurge on a top notch photographer in LA . . . but short of that, I can't imagine paying. However, that's just me. If you have something truly high quality and unique that people want and can't get anywhere else, they will pay. Also, maybe newer models or those looking to find their niche would be more interested in paying, as an experienced photographer to help lead the shoot would be an advantage to them. Jul 13 14 11:28 am Link Yes, I have gotten such messages. No, I did not hire the photographers. It wasn't anything they did wrong. I just didn't have the funds at the time or the desire to shoot. Sometimes I feel like a nut, sometimes I don't. I have traveled to pay a photographer (and visit my cousin at the same time). That was a one-time thing because I really wanted some specific looks. Jul 13 14 11:58 am Link It might be a bit early to draw conclusions, but generally speaking I think we can say that models don't pay traveling photographers. But for sure photographers pay traveling models. Why is that? For sure not because most of the time photographers can sell their pictures to magazines and stuff, not nowadays anymore, where even blogs that don't pay have high demands on styling, make-up and models.... And wanna be models are eager to pay. Jul 13 14 11:14 pm Link Rene de Haan wrote: A "model agency" that charges (in other words a scam) makes money off models because it sells promises. They claim they can get you the work, the fame, the fortune... all for one low price of $$$. Jul 14 14 02:14 pm Link I would not hit up a model like those that did recently, I got probably the same requests as you from the same models René...especially the russian ones But when travelling i do ask for a fee indeed, even if it's minimal... Asking for a fee has become easier, especially since i know now models that are using my "name" to commercialise modelling.... if their quality is so much higher than mine...sure, but else? It should be a balance, an exchange of equal quality...if the quality differs, it can be brought into balance by monetary means.. Jul 14 14 03:06 pm Link I don't know people keep saying charging models doesn't pay and that it is not a good bussiness plan but I keep getting hired by models and actor's all the time. I even have a few who have travel from out of state at their expense to my location to pay me for a shoot. I had 2 out of state models this month hired me for a shoot so it can't be that uncommon or maybe it is just my location. I guess everywhere will be different. I don't message models asking for pay that is tacky, whoever is doing the messaging either model or photographer in my opinion. Jul 14 14 03:09 pm Link Rene de Haan wrote: Why is that? Probably a combination of two things. Jul 14 14 04:55 pm Link I have paid photographers before. Trade is great, but it's a risk. Often, the model does not get back images she can use, or doesn't get back any images at all. It's just easier to seek out talent, and pay for their time. I get booked from my portfolio, and make my investment back very quickly anyway. *shrug* Jul 14 14 04:59 pm Link I've been hired by a few models but not many. Jul 14 14 05:07 pm Link I don't solicit models because I shoot mostly for fun but do get occasional (1-2 week) offers from models for paid work I know several traveling photographers that are here in Miami for Swim Week that have been soliciting models(I have seen their posts in FB and IG) for work and are fully booked. Of course these are guys/gals on top of their game. For those that know what they are doing (photography and marketing) there is money in model photography... but probably not to become rich if that is what you are looking for.
