I've come to the decision that I'm returning to the fine art pursuits and removing myself from commercial photography. I'll still accept a few client requests but I have to go back to fine art. It has already taken a huge weight off of my shoulders and I feel much more comfortable in my skin... if that makes sense to anyone. I'm excited to get those gallery shows and stretch my creative thinking concerning the context and message of my images versus the aesthetic.

Any who. With this change I'm concerned about MMers interpreting my role. Should I keep "Photographer" or should I replace it with "Digital Artist" or "Artist/Painter"? Photography is my medium but I rely heavily on Photoshop to alter the atmosphere.

Thoughts or opinions?

If your work's foundation is photography, I'd stay with photographer.

When I see those other titles I don't automatically assume they are the ones taking the pictures, so I would keep it.

They really should change the artist/painter to sculptor/painter. That would eliminate a lot of gray areas.

IMO this is digital art: http://drawcrowd.com/

I would stick with photographer for the sake of accuracy.

What you think you are primarily ? And, what do you want people to consider you as ?  If I'm looking for a photographer I search under photographer, but if I'm looking for a digital artist I search under digital artist.  That is, if you want to be found.

Thank you all for the input, I'll keep the role of photographer.

I think Artist is too general a term because artists use different tools to execute their work. I might drop that in the website suggestion and we'll add sculpture, painter, mixed traditional media (painters and sculptures) to the roster.

Primarily, I'm an artist. This is too general though; I'll make the costumes for my sets, apply the makeup, take the photograph, retouch it then create a digitally rendered image sometimes going beyond color correcting to altering it entirely or adding outside elements. The common element of my work though is that it is done with the intention of presenting the image itself, not all of the components.

And as I wrote that I realized that yes, Photographer is appropriate smile
