If you're talking pop then you're looking at mass marketed top 40 tunes. In the last 30 years i think that Madonna and Mariah Carey would be the two to argue about followed closely by Christina Aguillara in terms of impact and volume of tunes sold. Stuff like this is always subjective to one's own taste though. Sinead and Bush are little more than musical foot notes as far as I'm concerned.

Natalie Merchant? Tori Amos? and if you wanna go by popularity/record sales Celine Dion, Madonna, Streisand, Spears, GaGa, Cher (?) That being said, I was actually just thinking of O'Connor the other day...would be cool to hear some new stuff of hers

At first glance I longingly read this as "Sinead O'Connor's Bush". I am disappoint. I think you can tell who my vote is for.

Greatest - ?? Huh? O'Conner has a lovely voice - But greatest is a stretch. The greatest female voice alive right now is Mary Fahl's. Maybe not in terms of sales - but for pure vocal ability - she wins. A contralto female voice of her power is damned rare. (Annie Lennox and Carley Simon come to mind - but I don't think either of these has/had the sheer power of Fahl's voice) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvP5ZVHRSeA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nprjAwB1ASw

Maybe Garry is tone deaf? I dunno....or just trolling a bit on a Tuesday night. And as far as the suggestion above a couple posts, we can easily put this to rest in terms of one of the greatest female voices alive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MclLF473XtA

I've liked Kate Bush ever since I saw her on SNL about 1979. Glad to hear she's touring again.

Thanks! I'll look for more of her stuff But, I've seen Fahl live and it's easy to go all gushy - but, DAMN.... That lady can sing.

They're both kind of acquired tastes, really, although Kate tends to... um... overreach. I like Kate's songs better, though. Plus she's goofy and she knows it. Sinead tries too hard to be some kind of art chanteuse or something.

I'll go with 'None of the above.' It's all subjective, and each to his own. This bunch of Pop, Rap and Metal fans will disagree with me,. but... My personal opinion and vote goes for a classical crossover singer who is only 14 years old and just coming into her own. She's been an amazingly emotive powerhouse of a singer for the last four years, but this year has given us a hint at what she will be in a few short years, and what that will be is earthshaking. She already uses up most of the other superlatives. She just completed taping her THIRD PBS Great Performances special and her fourth studio album ("Awakening" - Sony label) releases next month. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Evancho

Oh come on! I write reviews and photograph musicians on a regular basis. I'm joining them in that Kate Bush and Sinead are an acquired taste. I would consider going to their concert if I didn't have to pay for the tickets. I would not buy their music though. That is my opinion. I agree with JQuest, it is subjective;

So you think those two women you've posted are "Arguably the two greatest ( White ) Female Popular Singers over the last 30 years in the West" ... but in my humble opinion, they are not the best or "greatest" ... not even close. Honestly, I'm sure my taste differs from you, and it's no big deal. I'd pay to hear Cher, Stevie Nicks, Mariah Carey, or Christina Aguilera ... and probably Madonna (more for her show though) My favorite all time female voice to listen to with the headphones on is Karen Carpenter. There will never be another voice quite like hers!

I've been a fan of Kate Bush since back in 1977 when I saw Kate's video for Wuthering Heights ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1pMMIe4hb4 ) which was included as part of the proof of concept package for Pioneer's Laserdisc video system. For you youngsters, the Laserdisc was an early incarnation of what eventually became the DVD. It featured a 12" disc enclosed in a protective plastic caddy and was roughly double the resolution of VHS tape. Then, in 1978 Kate Bush appeared on Saturday Night Live. I was hooked. I am so happy to see that she is performing again and still marching to the beat of her own drum.

I don't have the foggiest notion of Nemeth's musical background. I do believe GK has a rather well developed ear & musical taste, and I've got music in my gene pool that goes back God only knows how many generations. GK nailed it with his metaphor on Bush' voice. Have you had singing instruction Garry? Every played any musical instruments? Played in bands or ensembles of some sort? I started in the 2nd grade with woodwinds, went to brass, then on to keyboards & beyond by 5th grade.

Arguably the two greatest ( White ) Female Popular Singers over the last 30 years in the West Arguably by whom? David Seville & the Chipmunks? Sinead was a flash in the pan for the most part, adored by teenagers at the time. Honestly, I'd never heard of Kate Bush so I had to Google some. Looked up what her greatest hits were, and listened to them, nope have no recall of hearing any of them. Did six weeks worth of touring, and quit in the middle of it, and hasn't been on the road since 1979. God bless her voice hurt my eardrums, badly. Screeching cats whilst mating come to mind. So you arguably think these two characters are the two greatest pop singers over the last 30 years? Allow me to point a few other folks out. Stevie Nicks, Linda Rondstadt, Pat Benatar, Cher, Celine & Mariah. Whether anyone likes them or not, I'd bet the farm 90% of the world has heard of them, which I'd also bet the farm the percentage of folks that have heard of your two would come nowhere close to that. So you pick those two out for what reason? Yeah, the T word arguably comes to mind.

When I read the thread title, I thought it might be a celebrity death match or something. I was going to cheer for Bush. Like they used to chant during the Spring Break wet bikini contests on South Padre... "BUSH will WIN, BUSH will WIN, BUSH will WIN"

they're both awesome. if i had to pick one i'd pick sinead. kate's voice can get a bit screech owl (but a lot of popular women artists are like that now). when i think of kate i think of peter gabriel, one of my all-time favorite male singers. to me singers like mariah and celine are a complete joke (just have to laugh at them). i'll take sinead and kate any day.

No great surprise that you had not heard of Kate Bush - but what is surprising is how quickly you jump to condemn her and her fans Of course you could maybe open up your mind to learning more about her - maybe starting with this article from the Guardian Newspaper ( my guess is you have never heard of it either ) entitled " Kate Bush - The Queen of Art Pop who defied her critics " http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/a … n-concerts but its my guess that you are really not interested in broadening your perspective on music Much easier to go around calling people "trolls "when they don't share your views Edit And You go on to claim that " 90 per cent of the world " has heard of such artists as Pat Benatar ,Linda Ronstadt etc That would mean of course that these artists were known to the majority of peoples in China , India and the African Continent ( which collectively represent about 50 per cent of the worlds population ) You kill me ! Might be an idea for you to say visit your local high school and check and see if even half the students there know who these faded pop stars are PS your "farm "must not be so vast that you would gift it to me in such fashion ....lol

(Annie Lennox and Carley Simon come to mind - but I don't think either of these has/had the sheer power of Fahl's voice)" Annie Lenox had a lovely voice that seems to have thinned, if recent live performances are a good indicator - in her prime, she was wonderful - and caused one of the most persistent "Earworms" of my life - "No More I Love You's" ran in the background of my brain during a particularly wicked siege of insomnia for about 8 months. Never quite gone - I cannot endure it even today - as it starts that endless loop in the first few seconds of me hearing it..
