I've noticed that many photographers use a picture of a model as their avatar. I don't get that. An avatar is suppose to be a personal icon of an alter ego.

Since I don't want to rock the boat, I haven't posted an avatar, yet. Can someone explain why photographers on MM have chosen [usually female models regardless of their gender] models as avatars rather than their personal image or a graphical representation?

Thanks!

If I use a photo of a male model, then people sometimes think that's me and are surprised when they see me in person that I don't look like the guy in the photo.   I can't use any of my nude images as an avatar either, because it goes against the rules.  So, what am I left with?

And no, I don't need to post a photo of myself.  If a model wants to shoot with me, then it's because of what I can do with a camera; not what I look like behind it.

I believe the avatar is a brief way to showcase what you got. Models show their looks and photographers show their works. Although we don't want to admit it, but most of the time we judge the books by their covers, and the avatar is the most ready element for people to judge you, just in my opinion btw.

And welcome to MM smile

While in other fields it may be typical or even professional to display an image of yourself to communicate that you're trustworthy, and put your identity on the line, there have been too many people on this site (and others) who use photos of themselves to portray how hot and fuckable they think they are (directly contrary to the intent that this is a professional networking site, not a meat-market), thus photos of the photographers themselves are very atypical here.

The difference is that here you are reflecting your work, not your personal appearance.

The use of an avatar is not to represent yourself personally (as a photographer), because MM is not a dating site, and people should not be working with photographers based on what they look like, or what a computer generated version of them looks like.

The idea is that models click on your avatar and go to your profile because they like your photography, NOT because of what you look like, and they often feel that those photographers using a photo of themselves risk coming across as creepy or not here for the right reasons.

Thus, the culture here is that photographers typically pick photos that they feel are eye-catching and represent their work.

Hope that helps.

I'm with you buddy. The creepy looking dude in my avatar is me. Probably doesn't help finding models but oh well.

Put whatever you want up there. For a little while I had a hairy spider in mine.

Your avatar is your shop window, it should catch the eye and lure people in to look at what else you've got to show.

Why any photographer would have his own pic as an avatar is beyond me.

The purpose of the avatar is not to show who you are, but rather to get people to look at your work. While that may not be "normal" in some places, it is the norm on internet modeling sites.

Realize that many people use avatars that are not themselves on groups of all kinds. You can use anything as an avatar........including your pets, cartoons, and the like. It is simply an easy way to recognize who it is, on forums like this.

I wont check a page that doesn't have a avatar up

it should showcase your work not a image of yourself.

If I was as eye-catching as some of the models I've shot, then I'd use my own image. Luckily, I think people who want to work with me care more about what I've shot, than what I look like smile

avatar is like an ad....look here...buy this....your choice...put up nothing...will not waste time looking...put up something I have no interest in looking at, will not look...get my attention, I will look...simple...Mo

Oh, and any avatar is better than none. Try one out and see what the response is. You can always switch it out later.

I had the same thoughts as Frank and due to technical difficulties in uploading, have only just upload my avatar, of me. I've now just read these posts and am wondering whether to change it.

I agree though, I didn't wont nothing, so was keen to get something on it.

They use a picture of their best work so that people will want to click and see their portfolio.

I used to think the same as you do. I do put up self-portraits from time to time, but most of the time I now put up my latest or best shots.

Basically you avatar on MM is the opposite of almost any other site online. On most not using  your picture is creepy, here it's the norm.

+1

what I look like as a photographer has absolutely nothing to do with how my work looks,
the avatar is a preview of your portfolio work.
