I was going to comment on a douche-post in another thread earlier. Then I remembered I just spent the past 8 hours getting paid to edit some guy's book, and I suddenly didn't care anymore.

I've had to do some in the past, and I never found it fun... although it was fun having some discussions where I posed questions to other editors and sometimes we were totally stumped. I remember they also got on me about annoying stuff, like always spelling out any number less than 10, I honestly can't remember all the rules, and there is so much stuff I totally don't know.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing all day now - spelling out numbers less than ten, moving sentences around, being annoying. Actually, the first piece I turned in was "too perfect," and I've had to work on being less precise about stuff, because apparently, I'm turning informational books into scholarly journals, and they really don't want that. I'm having to relearn how to write badly. It's kind of weird, but fun at the same time. It has to be published at a level where it can be read and understood by "a smart 5th grader." If any of my elementary school teachers were still alive, they'd be rolling in their graves. I had an exceptional language education growing up, because all my teachers were old mountain ladies, who grew up in one-room school houses and still had that smack-your-knuckles with a ruler mentality. My first grade teacher actually tried to convert me to right-handedness, which didn't work at all.
