This horrible cough is literally killing me off. Has anyone got any good remedies to stop the coughing? Especially at night?

Blackberry brandy, my grandmother used to swear by it.

Avoid dairy products because they increase mucus.  Drink some hot tea like chamomile before bed.

Also, prop yourself up on pillows at night to your head is higher than your feet.

Depends on why you are coughing.  See a doctor.

But my home remedies include the following:

...  Drink "clear" liquids only.
...  Avoid dairy.
...  Humidifiers, if appropriate.
...  Take a steam bath & breathe deeply.  (I got a steam room in my house).
...  Lie on your side, not your back.
...  Avoid cough medications -- they work only temporarily and the cough
comes back worse than before.  And they taste bad.

Good luck.

I have really bad allergies as it is but i've also had cold and the flu so it's just gone on my chest and gave me an awful cough that means I can't even sleep at the moment! I eat lots of cheese daily so sounds like I should avoid that, thank you for all of your advice I'll try them smile

Another possible choice is a good cognac, neat. (Also a brandy.)

The flu will make you feel miserable.  That's why I had my flu shot yesterday.

Take a very large dose of a strong laxative about thirty minutes before you go to bed.

...you will be too afraid to cough.

A cough is not a bad thing.  It's your body trying to get rid of crap in your lungs, so you don't get sicker.  A dry/nonproductive cough can be an annoyance, but hard candy/water can sooth your throat.  Cough suppressants should be used as little as possible, just for a specific time frame.  Using cough suppressants means the crud sits in your lungs longer, and you get sicker for longer.
An expectorant helps get rid of mucus, what your body is trying to cough up.  Guaifenesin is the active ingredient you want.  And drink lots of fluids/water.  If you are even slightly dehydrated the mucus will be thicker, harder to get rid of.  Drink, lots.

Tea with honey always helps, the best remedy for me is two teaspoons of honey and ginger juice. And if all fails: Saunaa. big_smile

Pour one teaspoon over steaming water (from boiling) in a pot on a table and inhale the steam.

It is shockingly strong at first, but you will get used to it in a few seconds...

Sorry, but this is a myth.  Milk does not increase mucus production.

OK... thanks... I left out a word.  Dairy products increase mucus thickness.

Happy now?  smile

You aren't by any chance on Lisinopril are you? I took it, and after a few months started up with a horrible cough  that usually started around 3am. I didn't connect it to the drug because it didn't start until months after I started taking it.

if it's allergies or a cold, you're coughing because you're draining at night.
What works for me is Night Time Cold and Cough Triaminic.
I also take Dayquil during the day and double up on drinking water.

It's a prescription medication for high blood pressure, so if you haven't heard of it, you're not taking it. It's not like it's in over the counter medications.

try taking an antacid... sometimes the cough is a result of the post nasal drip irritating the stomach and causing reflux.

avoid anything dairy or mucus producing...

and suck on something that thins the saliva... like a hard candy.

if nothing else... try a codeine based cough suppressant!

boil together a lemon,  lime, a bunch of honey, some red pepper flakes, and some ginger(2 1/2 inch piece sliced up) for about 40 minutes (squeeze the fruit in there)     drink the pot
