Iconic fashion designer Oscar de la Renta has died, a family member told ABC News. He was 82.

De la Renta was diagnosed with cancer in 2006.

Are you sure about that? I was under the impression that De La Renta is in fact a rather prestigious Puerto Rican surname (his father was from PR).

OK, what I don't know about fashion would comfortably fill a book entitled "Everything To Know About Fashion."

But I liked Mr. de la Renta. Whenever I saw him on television being interviewed at some show or wherever, he was always groomed, dressed up, and exquisitely classy. In an environment of pretentiousness and form over substance, he was a bedrock of good sense and sound foundations. As I heard someone else say, he was like your favorite dignified and humorous uncle that you wanted to come over every Thanksgiving.

Even though I'm not a fashion guy, not by any stretch, we should all have the positive and enduring influence on the world that this man had.
