so many things can go wrong with dying hair, let alone a drastic change from black to white hair.

its worth having a professional do it so that you dont end up bald (hopefully)

Mixing and matching products especially powerful hair dyes and etc.can be a big problem. I would wait a few posts and see if any pros can give you advice as well.

That is unless burning the hell out of your skin, going bald, or destroying your hair is a risk you are willing to take.

In a tattoo shop i used to go into they had a sign that said, "Good tattoos aren't cheap. Cheap tattoos aren't good." It's the same with hair.

Go to a pro.

Ion Color Brilliance

well my hair was extremely orange when i bleached it so it might differ.
but if you go to a beauty supply store they have different levels of violet toners. i used the most violet toner and it gave me a perfect platinum

you can buy them at:
http://www.ioncolorbrilliance.com/
or your local sallys beauty supply store (which is where i got mine)

they have blue toners too. obv

Do you have a link to the actual product? Nothing linked off of the main page is a toner. ION is actually a half-decent colour for consumers, even if you'd never see it in a real salon.

no you bleach it first cuz that's the only way you can lighten it that much...
are you dying your entire head? cuz i'd recommend doing a small area first..just so you dont fry your entire head if you mess up lol

and i found the product...Permanent Hair Colour>>Shades>>High Lift Blondes>>Cool Blonde

thats the exact same shade i used. it doesnt say toner but the girl there told me it was? i didnt fry my hair so i guess it works...but maybe you should ask at the store.
in the box theres this paper that says all the direction. if you have black they tell you you need to pre-lighten your hair with bleach before you use their product. you dont have to bleach it blonde just bleach it to be like a light/medium brown and use the toner on that. that way you wont waste your 40 developer as much and bleach your hair less smile

oh also it helps if you buy plastic hair clips to pin/section your hair and stuff and theyre like $6.99 at walmart?

I'm not hearing much from the pros. Please be careful following the advice of people who may or may not have training in this field.

And just to be clear, Model Mayhem is in no way responsible for advice given in these forums. Follow the advice given you AT YOUR OWN RISK.

LOL  I see this ending very badly for the model.  So I think I will sit back with my popcorn and wait for her next thread titled "HELP!".  LOL

Why, why, why don't people take the best advice there is on the internet..... Go see an expert!  I just don't get it.

if you say your "slow" when it comes to coloring hair then i'd leave it for the professionals or else you may end up with damaged hair

Unless you "figured out" which salon you're going to, throw a "good bye" party for your hair. If you follow the instructions in this thread, it's all going to break off.
Its all good though.... Bald modelling is getting in vogue. You're gonna hit the curver just as its coming!

Good!

So, you're gonna get in your car and drive to a professional to get your hair properly colored instead of following the advice of someone that got lucky.

Wonderful.

Ash, I will quote these words warmly an fondly again and again in the future, with credit to you of course smile  This is wise advice and it needs to be hung on a sign at my station and perhaps I'll print it on a comp card for clients with attitude smile

Back on topic, if you decide to do this yourself at home with advice of your modeling peers, I'll ask only that you do a small favor for us!  Please post a before and after shot of what you used to look like and what you now look like from following forum thread advice... I'd love to add it to my growing collection of things I've had to fix and I would like to see if yours is an exception to the kitchen beautician rules or a follower.  It's not that we wish you ill when you try to perform these services for yourselves guys, we don't want or need that sort of bad karma BUT I am not sure I've met ANY business person in my life time willing to throw out the secrets of their craft for free...  we've spent years learning and honing our skills to be the best we can be at them and when people who did their sister's husband's brother's wife's cousin's hair with a 40 vol. on scalp radical blue bleach from Sally's and it only broke off a little of her hair and made it fluffy and like down feathers and they thought it looked good so they applied a toner and called it done does not mean that it looked even or right and it sure does not make them experts in giving advice to people who's hair they can't see.  We don't just want to keep our advice secret because we make more money if you come to us, it's been established that you spend as much at Sally's trying to do it as you would just coming to get it done right the first time!  It's that if I give you advice without seeing your hair...  your hair breaks all off and rinses down the drain you now look like hell and you bad mouth my advice and it wrecks my business... where would I be?  I don't just slap the same formula on client after client no more than your neighbor's cousin's uncle's sister's hair be done with the same formula as Jane's on this forum...  and it's time that you all realized that.  We aren't just being mean and stingy with advice on this topic, we're protecting our professional integrity and your hair, the process is different from one time to the next with a single client, a complete consultation is done before any service is provided and as a guideline we follow what was done last time but it's not always the same procedure to get the result the client wants nor is it going to be the same thing that made Bob's hair blue will make Sam's hair green...  Please do at least have a consultation with a salon professional before you attempt these things at home... someone said in another thread related to this topic 'you spend hundreds of dollars on shoes and clothes but you're too cheap to pay someone to do your hair that you wear everyday?' and it's true!! Go have your free consultation with a salon professional and then decide if it's worth it to you.

I went from pitch black to white white at a salon and even then it took 5 hours of work for that poor girl to get it done. At the end of the day my scalp was huge and raw and awful, and I had to go to the hospital the next day because my scalp swelled up, went dead, and I got horribly dizzy - the poison control lady told me it was pretty common reaction to drastic bleaching.

Moral of the story: if that's how it was when a professional did it, I can't even imagine you doing it yourself.

Ouch!! This is why we need to remember to ask complete and dilligent questions and when in doubt from a client consultation always patch and strand test a client!! It takes extra time up front but it saves potential problems at the end when a client could have a possibe allergic reaction to your products in salon sad  You poor thing sad

Going from full pigment to none?  Eeep.  If you want to have a scalp after (not to mention hair), I'd see a colorist.

Prepare to get hair extensions for volume, you'll lose some of the volume of your hair when bleaching it from black to white. But hey, extensions are fun. Why not wait and go in stages instead of aiming for all at once?

If your hair is black, then it is going to be hell to get it white (as you call it) without going through the brassy red orange look for a bit.

My hair was blue black when I was 17, and took about 3 years to get it the shade it is now.

Bleach on your scalp can leave really bad burns. You need a professional!!! AHH!!! I am a hairdresser and I know to get your hair that white you will need a high volume developer and I'm telling you now this could turn out really bad at home. Please go somewhere!! but if you do decide to do it at home Good Luck! On another note there is a really cool silver color that you (or a salon)could use as a toner that i think would be awesome!
