About Me

Encaustic painting is a 2000 year old painting medium used by the Fayum Egyptians 2000 years ago for thier realistic mummy cask paintings. These paintings were painted during a persons lifetime and generally hung in thier house until death at which time they were mounted to thier caskets. Thier colors today appear as if they were just painted. Thom uses this technique in his encaustic portraits today.

Thom Priemon born in Philadelphia in 1947 and studied at the Philadelphia College of Art from 1974 thru 1976. He then studied painting methods and materials privately with Francis Cortland Tucker from 1978 thru 1980. The artist also worked for 10 years throughout the 1980's with hand printed lithographs, collaborating with such impotant lithographers like George Miller and Sons in New York and Timothy Sheesley a Tamarind Master Printer before returning back to encaustic painting in the 1990's. His encaustic landscapes ane still life paintings were presented in a one man exhibition at the Woodmere Art Museums in mid 1990's and a selection of his still life encaustic paintings were on view at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Gallery all thru the 1990's. The artist has lectured on The Art of Encaustic's at the Woodmere Art Museum as well as the South Jersey Artist Association. A full color book was published in 2010 on the artist encaustic portraits titled "Encaustic Portraits by T.E. Priemon".
