Has anyone actually sold used equipment to a dealer as part of a deal for buying new equipment from them? Feel you got a good deal? One of my friends has an AE-1, Flash and 3 lenses (incl a 135mm and a 70-210 zoom) and would like to trade up to a DSLR. I told him the stuff isn't worth much, but a dealer might work a deal if you buy the new camera from them. The problem is I have no idea who to send him to.

I think B&H buys used equipment, but he'd be better off selling outright.

KEH is good. Figure you'll get about 25 percent of what you think it's worth.

Columbus Camera Group (www.columbuscameragroup.com) and Midwest Photo Exchange (mpex.com) have both treated me well.

Disclaimer, Columbus Camera is a client of mine.

Fred Miranda and photo.net are reasonable places to sell things.

Sadly, I thinink your advice is right. He's not going to get much for an AE-1.

KEH.com has a function where you can immediately check what they would give you for your used stuff. Try it and you will quickly try to sell it on eBay instead.

Already checked. My research indicates this is one of the few times that eBay would not be worth the bother.

Thanks for this. Their on-line estimate is about what I expected. Do you know how much more (if any) they add on if you buy new stuff from that at the same time?

It seems most dealers advertise they will buy used stuff or take in trade. I was hoping to hear from folks that have actually dealt with some of these places for first hand experience feedback (good or bad).

In todays market you are much better off donating the equipment to a school or youth group that is teaching photography basics using film.   The tax write off will be much greater then the cash that a dealer will give you.

You'll get the most for it on eBay.  Another dealer in Ohio is Midwest Photo.  I can get you their 800# if you like.
