I have the old CS version of Photoshop.

It's not letting me open any RAW files. What can I do?

EDIT: I have a Canon 50D

some newer cameras are not supported on older versions of CS, until or unless Adobe decides to do so, which they may not. it may be time to update to CS4.

if you are like me, I used to have CS 2. When I upgraded to a D90, I couldn't update Camera Raw for PS, and had to buy the $200 upgrade to CS 4. So you may have to do that.

Oh wow...I want to update to CS4 anyway but does that mean I can't do anything with my RAW files in the mean time? Is there like a trial or something I can use until I get it...that would really suck!

It's the CS...reaaally old...I think it's from like 2005

You neglect to state what camera. If Canon you can use DPP.

you should be able to use the Adobe DNG converter until you update to CS4

What camera are you shooting?  Canons come with a disk that will read their raws.

ohhh yea sorry. It's a Canon 50D and it does come with the DPP (which I hate lol). But I haven't messed with it, haven't seen that I can edit with it...

If you have a newer camera, forget about updates, Adobe stops updating software to kind of force you into buying the newer software. if its an older camera, you can probably update. you can use the software that came with your camera and convert that way but it is a long and tedious process.

When asking a question like this its important to give specific details about the Camera model you are using and what version of PS.
If you are using a canon camera they come with with a software disc that will allow you to convert your RAW files to something Photoshop can work with.
Another option is to download the Adobe DNG converter. This will convert your RAW files into something that any version of ACR(Adobe RAW converter can work with.

I'm new to the whole RAW thing, so it's my first time trying to edit that way, but if I convert them from Raw won't that lose the point of shooting raw for editing?

Agreed.

It's a free download from Adobe, and lets any version of Photoshop which supports Raw files at all handle any currently supported Raw files. It's kept up to date--the latest update released a couple of months ago.

Except that ACR 2.4 doesn't work on 50D files.

OTOH, the DNG links provided go to a standalone program which can convert 50D CR2 files into DNG which can be handled with her version of Photoshop.
