Interesting definitions, but in regards to Playboy how would you define erotic and sexual?

I know that these are your definitions, but I feel that through the years that Playboy has had its share of sexual and erotic photos. I think Marilyn Monroe was a very sexual woman and her poses/photos displayed such. I also remember the Bebe Buell photos in the 70's. I'd have to say that some of them were along the lines of sexual or erotic.

If you have a chance, you should check out a book called the New Erotic Photography. It might cause you to re-examine your definitions. Either way, an interesting thread and some very good comments.

But really, don't you beleive that each magazine has a defineable style???

At one time, that was really true.

Playboy was all about the 'girl next door' and emphasized her personality

Penthouse was about the girl down the street that you might get to sleep with and emphasisized her sexuality.

Hustler was about the naughty girl that worked at a strip club and focused more on her genitalia.

But that was years ago and things have changed.

The audience has changed.

Expectations have changed.

Women have changed as well.

These days, for a woman to exhibit her sexuality, there is no longer the social stigma attached that was prevalent years ago. Body parts are only just that . . . parts.

When Playboy first started showing breasts, it was scandalous and men masturbated to those images.

When Penthouse showed pubic hair for the first time in American history, readers whacked off to that.

When Hustler started showing places where the sun don't shine, you know what people did.

These days, all three magazines are barely able to keep afloat in their circulation because they cannot keep up with what is available on the internet.

The fact of the matter is that whatever someone finds erotic and stimulating someone else will condemn as tasteless porn.

My guess is that the moment Hefner dies, or the company gets sold (if you have 300 mil, it's yours now) the older style of 'Playboy Glamour' will disappear and the hardcore (where they really make their money) will quickly surface.

Hey Tony,

Think the publishers missed the mark though.

Their DEFINITION of erotica is not mine!!!

300MM is, of course, overvalued. But if someone can get the company at a fair price, forward-looking, they could easily polish the brand and tread water until Hugh does pass (and may he rest in peace when it happens) and turn the brand into an homage.

It would require that the IP rights be sold intact and that his estate pre-contract for his likeness and personality to be part of those IP rights.

If times were different (and I had about three times the leverage I do), I'd actually seriously consider pitching the idea, as I think it could be done. The late 201X's will be ripe for a revival of the swanky 1950's as we come out of this economic trench into a new bubble before the coming energy revolution of the 2020's.

Most of you will think I'm nuts. That's good.

hey awj, what is your definition of "erotica"?  And of the three, which do you think defines your work?  That is a very good book. I saw a new edition at a bookstore recently.

Well TonyZ,
Thank you for sticking with the concept...

My DEFINITION of erotica is something that's
a bit forbidden,naughty,maybe even dirty...
Similar, but not the same as art!!!

My shooting/posing style is closer to a couple
of magazines that we havn't even discussed here.

Hey Damonica,

Havn't seen an issue of "High Society" in a long
time...seem to think they would fall into the
"Hustler Style" genre though.

What did you think???

This thread is really funny. My parents have only heard of Playboy and they think it's heinous/from the deepest pits of a moral hell. They don't realize it's, you know, pretty okay, and like nobody died on Playboy bc their colon split open from having sex with a horse on camera or anything like that.

That's a great point...
Every time i talk to an art director of a magazine,
they say:
"Ad sales are down, subscription volume is down,
don't know if we will survive,,,"

So maybe,in the not to distant future,
"Playboy,Penthouse and Hustler Style"
will only be terms/memories...
Not really linked to anything physical...

Too bad.

Everything is digital i would rather get something off line then buying it in a store and feeling like a perve. Example i was buying somethings at a sex shop and asked to use the restroom (I really had to pee) and they said no and gave me a creepy look digital is way easier

I think that if magazines like the ones we are discussing tonight, as well as a few others, went digital, it would be very sad. Some magazines make interesting choices of paper/stock to print their images on. All photos don't look great on gloss stock. Sometimes a nice matte stock or heavier grade of paper really add something special to a photo.

Yes . . . like production and printing costs that puts more wannabe publishers into bankruptcy.

Of course there is the whole "Green" thing...

But,I love the printed page!!!
Might be a generational thing...

I think it is.
When I ask some of my younger models if
they would like some 8 x 10's,
they look at me like i'm from outer space.

Too bad...good print making/printing is an art.
Would hate to see it go away.

Maybe tomorrow.

Id define it pretty much the same, at least in the terms of what photographers usually mean when they ask for it.

Playboy Style- Full nude, but no "pink", bent over shots or close ups of the biz, possibly spread legs (tho some refer to that as "playboy plus")
Penthouse Style- Nude with spread legs, bent over shots & close ups, possibly "pink"
Hustler Style- Adult nudes, explicit, with "pink" shots and possibly beyond that

Fetish: Something you secretly like and want to explore and enjoy with your neighbors or best friend's wife/girlfriend.

Bondage: Something your neighbor/best friend wants to do to your wife/girlfriend.

Let's get this thread going again. It was fun last night.

I wouldn't be so sure that Hef is going to hold this to his grave anymore, or at the very least I think that he could significantly reduce his share of voting stock.  Currently he owns roughly 70% of the company's voting stock, but his lifestyle is set to take a serious hit if things don't come around quickly.  It may be his baby, but it is bleeding cash at an alarming rate and is showing no real signs of change.

Hef might love his baby, but selling his baby at $150 MM would still net him a 50% premium over the current fair market price of $100 MM.  Hef might be emotionally attached to the mag, but he is not a dummy.  I think that it's possible that we could see a major move here before year end.  Again, not necessarily a complete liquidation, but the off loading of maybe 20-30% of the voting stock.  So long as he and Christie still have a majority (or even a strong voting) stake, I believe that he might be open to a cash infusion.

But that is just my two cents.
