I have talked to serveral models before shoots to dicuss their outfits for the shoot. Some of them will not wear a swimsuit thong or lingerie thong. Some will. I feel that wearing a thong bottom is almost standard now for glamour modeling. I've also talked with some who will wear a two piece swimsuit but will not wear lingerie. What's the difference? They show the same amount. So my question to you is

1. Would you wear a thong? Why or why not? and
2. Is there a difference between a 2 piece swimsuit and a lingerie set?

All answers respected (because everyone is different) and appreciated.

I agree.  I can't get models to wear thongs.  And I also have models that will shoot in two piece swimsuits but not bra and panties.  I'm very interested to see the responses!

Bikinis don't have the sexual undertones that lingerie have.

Example: You see a photo of a 15 yr old in a bikini, no problem. You see a photo of a 15 year old in lingerie... whole different scenario.

And I personally don't shoot in thongs because I feel that's the equivalent of having nothing on. A piece of material that covers my crotch and butt crack just isn't my idea of clothed.

A model who would shoot in a thong is one click away so the hassle is unnecessary

Eh, a swimsuit is a swimsuit, and lingerie is lingerie.  Even though they're nearly the same thing, they still have the context of one being an outfit that you can wear out to the beach, while the other has the "don't look! I'm in my undies!" feel to it.

As far as the thongs part, some are comfortable in them, some aren't.  You ever wear one of those "cock socks" underwear?  Pretty much the same thing as regular underwear, but the idea of wearing it is still ridiculous.

I've shot commercial lingerie for many years.. It's quite different than bathing suits.. you can usually see though them and they're quite skimpy too. It's almost like the model having nothing on.. somewhat!

I don't understand.

If you're doing a shoot that calls for a particular wardrobe and a model won't shoot in it, you move on to the next model.

Why the controversy?

I do a fair amount of lingerie work, but I take issue with thongs because I hate the damn things. In my opinion there's nothing sexy or glamorous about them, and well your ass is hanging out so not much of a pair of "bottoms" really. I don't even wear them for my fiance (and like myself he's all about the lingerie and me dressing up).

Lingerie and swim wear are different in the regard that lingerie is intimate wear. It implies sexuality more so than a swimsuit, even though they both may show the same amount of skin. It's about the purpose, not the amount of material.

I have done lingerie shoots with thongs and bras .. I have never had a problem with wearing them .. have done outside shots as well .. I feel more comfortable wearing these than I do a bikini .. I think it is the cut of the panties for the bikini .. I need to find thong bikinis .. smile

Some of the models I've talked to in the past stated that thongs were too trashy and lingerie was too intimate. They only want the husband or boyfriend to see them in that manor. But all that goes out the window if Victoria's Secrets calls about a catalog spread.

But don't they though, because I've seen some bikinis that are very revealing and generate sexual thoughts. I understand your example about the 15yr perfectly, but I mean in a modeling aspect. Like a 27yr old person difference.

Why is it acceptable for a girl to walk around outside in a swimsuit but not lingerie? There is clearly a difference-- and that difference is social connotation.

I won't shoot in these-- but I am also not a glamour model.

I've head a few say that they would never pose nude either, but would if it was for Playboy. Maybe its because its a whole new level to their career. I'm not sure, I don't really shoot nudes.

Duh. It's something they don't want to do but may be WILLING to do.

Why is it acceptable for girls to have a swimsuit painted on them and they are allowed to be a public events and we know that technical they are nude?

Stop making sense Kelli! lol

BTW, A) I think with some of the swimwear I've seen here, that lingerie might be the more modest way to go.

and B) to play devils advocate; you wouldn't shoot in swimwear for a million dollars?

Don't ask me why we have ridiculous social connotations. But we are the ones who have to deal with them.

Also, the professional girls I know who will wear swimsuit and not lingerie won't wear the icky-looking swimwear.

So is it about money? Does the almighty dollar dictate what a model wears or doesn't wear? Is Playboy too trashy? And does it become a lot less trashy as the dollar amount gets higher?

P.S. I know a lot of models in Playboy I respect and choose not to call them trashy. I also do not choose to take that route myself, money or no money. Does that answer your question?

And its not just the dollar amount-- it's the name. It's in the fame of it, and the reputation, and feeling confident in the company as it is well known. There is a certain level of perceived protection that doesn't exist when working with an internet photographer, especially one not agency approved/ published/ etc.

I don't even think it'd take a lot (if any money) to be honest.  I honestly believe that most girls would be willing to wear a thong or something revealing just to put them into a position they desire.  Offer even the most tame aspiring fashion model the cover of Vogue Italia and I'm sure they'd at the very least seriously consider it if not do the job outright.  Offer the average glam model a playboy PMOY and they'd show the bewbs too.  We've all got our price (despite what many may say) and it's just that for the majority; shooting with average Joe on MM isn't gonna be enough to get them to change their beliefs or personal standards of what they find acceptable.

It's really not that important to get inside the head of another person for this.  Just state in the casting exactly what the wardrobe will be, and those who are comfortable with it will reply, and those who are not won't.

You clearly like thongs, so stop dancing around it.  Own it and those who also like wearing them will be a good match.

The only justification I can see for even having this back and forth is to attempt to change someone's mind.  That will get you results that look like what it is: a compromise.

Much better, IMO, to lay it all out on the line in painstaking detail,  and then only shoot folks who want to shoot the concept as you envision it so much, that if needed, they could compete for it.

Not so much thongs-but I will wear them-I love wearing underwear and bras in shoots-outside and in. One pair of underwear should have their own album because they're in so many shoots. I don't feel any more modest in bra and underwear than bathing suit. I see the point though-also the fabric is thicker on bathing suits.

I understand the example, but I mean in a closed setting, not in public walking around outside, and still not wanting to wear thong panties or a thong swim bottoms on the beach at a closed private session.

It also depends what it is worth to each person.

There are models with billionaire parents. They aren't as likely to fold for money, or may be more likely to fold for fame, there are a lot of factors. I guess my point is everyone has a price, but that price may not be money. If someone offered me a million to get naked right now? I'm going to say I doubt it. But why would that happen? But if someone was going to kill someone if I didn't do a nude photo shoot, yes, I would do it, no doubt.

I make the same point. There are bikinis that may generate sexual thought, depending on the person, but that's not its purpose. The whole purpose of lingerie is to generate sexual thoughts.

James_Cessna wrote:

Same principles, yes. Same benefits? psssh no. Putting on a thong for Victoria's Secret would be far more beneficial to one's career than putting on a thong for a random photog on MM. Plus models wearing thongs in VS catalogs are selling underwear. Models wearing thongs in Playboy, for example are selling sex.

Now I understand a bit-- we have a  misunderstanding. It's not about what happens while shooting-- it's a about the pictures.

Many of us are young and haven't decided exactly what we want in life.

When you have lingerie pictures on the internet, you can limit yourself in other aspects of life.

Same as not doing them can limit your modeling career. It's all a balancing act. But why draw the line at thong and not bikini? Well, thong covers very little, why not just go nude. And if you're nude, why does it matter if it's semi=pornographic..

point is, most of us have to choose to draw the line somewhere, and usually we have our own personal reasons for doing so.
