Just curious if you tried the face recognition feature?  I wish they'd engineer it so you could use it with the viewfinder (instead of liveview), and the focus points would pinpoint the eyes automatically.

Not that I was looking at her eyes anyway... but... you know, for the sake of continuing education...

Nope... didn't use face recogition... the basic 39 point wraparound... also used it on this 5000 ISO shot of Mercedes... straight out of the camera JPEG with same lens in available light... 180th of a second at F6.7...

in case you didn't know, the d800 has the face recognition feature in optical viewfinder mode. it doesn't go for the eyes though, just the general face

Great shot Gary!  You have great access to those California girls.  Do you think that you will be encouraged to shoot a short sample video with your one of your gorgeous models with the D600 and post a link on this thread?

First, lovely shots of some very lovely ladies! Bravo!

Looking at the first shot, the one at 3200iso, I see the noise under her chin, for instance, and I dont see that same level of noise in the iso5000 shot...

(By the way, I am an old film shooter. I used to think the golf ball sized grain I got shooting tri-x at 3200 and developing in accufine was WONDERFUL, so the noise in these shots looks fabulous to me....)

Gary, I know you shoot in camera jpgs, may I ask what kind of in camera settings you are using to "process" these shots.... which size jpg, noise reduction etc etc....

I am very impressed by the performance of the 600, for the price point. Loving that trend of more and more capability filtering down into the more affordable bodies... Just has to make for some great shots in the future..............

I don't understand why you'd use such a high ISO with available light, unless the sun was already down and you only had a little bit of ambient light left. 

Was that the case here?

There was no sun at all.  That shot was taken in an extremely dark forest... as was this D600 shot... also 3200 ISO...

Shutter speed and aperture?

As a point of interest, I also shoot in super dark locations. This spot below is in a DEEP valley, down in a crevace, with a massive amount of trees covering, and an entire mountain covering the sun.

ISO 400 - 1/50 - f/2 - 9 stops darker than sunny16 (9-11 is fair average here) --- oh, shot with a shitty old rebel, not a d600, just an example of similar conditions.



Going by some of your exif data - seems like some of the places you shoot are just as dark, 9-11 stops darker than sunny 16.

Is there any particular reason why you opt to go with lower ISO, which though good, definitely shows fault, much moreso than shooting wider aperture lenses, as f/6.7 is pretty fail for low light.

+ 10    No comparison.... but funny how he's still telling you you're doing it wrong. Clean high iso obviously will let you go for more dof or longer focal lengths in low light. Pretty simple concept even if someone says it's "pretty fail"?

Yeah, I like it too. The grip is great.

I may have to try out some video. A few minutes at least. I also went to Game 5 of the NLCS last year.... with the D7000.  Here's a couple samples from the game and WS celebration.... from way far away in the stands. I have much closer seats this year.
