I took German in High School, and apparently they capitalize nouns. I've sorta gotten into the habit of doing so, even when writing in English. I think it's better. Do you?

It's like a verb, but sits around being lazy and not doing shit.  The verbs get pissed at the nouns and get inspired to take action.  And the adjectives are like Perez Hilton and sit around blogging and describing it.

I always thought capitals were a punishment unless a sports team, then you make the first letter big, like in Capitals.

I have a Dog.

Should Dog be capitalized?

The little Boy had a grey Cat?

You see how ridiculous the Germans look?

When I started to actually live in the States... it was a tough one to adjust to the all lower case writing and not to capitalize nouns...

What would be the rationale for capping all nouns? If all nouns are capped, there's no distinctiveness, so what's the point? Based on that mentality, you might as well uncap all of them.

A common noun is not capped.

A proper noun is capped and hence gains import to the reader.

It's a good system, and there's no need to change it.

The point was that the thread should not have been moved from Off Topic into SF2 because it had nothing to do with SF2

Might be a good idea, as part of a major overhaul of our writing system.  Unlike some writing systems, ours doesn't make clear what part of speech a word is, e.g.:

laying down.  That could mean "resting on the bed," or "putting eider feathers on the bed."  But if it were written, "laying Down," then we would know the latter meaning was intended.

English's writing system is so screwy, I support anything that would increase clarity.  Maybe capitalizing nouns would help.

If you want to be viewed as semi-literate in English, yes, it's better.

At one time they pretty much were as there were no books on grammar and spellin. The internet is bringing it all back a couple of hundred years latter.

Yeah... and the grammar is also a little bit more complex than English.

English grammar is simple, but our "system" of spelling is fiendishly complex.  My sympathies to all those who had to learn it as adults.

I can envision seldom used pronouns being worth less than those used more frequently. Or maybe it would be the other way around. If you use a common pronoun it would cost less than bringing in a specialist in the field. Of course, there would need to be a study (costing the US taxpayer several trillion dollars) to rank the pronouns in order of use frequency, importance, etc. Then Congressional approval of their ranks in each list. Maybe we could recoup the cost of the study and reduce the national debt and deficit by charging foreign tourists and immigrants for their use.

Hey, I grew up speaking Cajun/Creole French in south Louisiana. When I speak French to someone from Europe, it sounds like a time warp with me speaking Colonial English (think G. Washington, T. Jefferson, B. Franklin) to someone in America today.

Nein.  Es ist nicht besser.  Warum glaubst du das es besser ist?  Es macht mehr Arbeit, als man den ersten Buchstaben groß machen muss.
