Just popped in my taskbar a minute or two ago. Did anyone else get the notification inviting you to reserve a copy of Windows 10?

No and I doubt I will, as I opted not to install the Win 10 "nag patch" that those sneaky bastards at Microsoft have been including as an "Important Update" with Windows Update (and auto installed unless deselected) over the last few weeks.

Reserve a copy??

Why, will it be in short supply?  I think this sort of "advertising" is distasteful.  It's intrusive to push it to me through my computer operating system.

And won't this update be free to users of Win7 or newer?  The first year, anyway.

It will be free yes, but they stated that the push will be done aggressively, to avoid a similar situation of xp, that resulted in many companies around the world requesting extension of the service instead of updating. The Dutch government for example, is still working with xp on many systems, and requested last year to keep the service provided. MS simply hates that wink

It may be a poor choice of wording, but "Reserve a copy" simply means you are in the queue - like a wristband before tickets for a concert go on sale. This may help Microsoft assess the resources required for the initial release - 3GB x a lot of users = could break the internet.

I doubt if I will get a pop-up notice since MS hosed my computer from all of their 8.1 updates since last year when they threw out that bad one and then pulled it after the damage was done with their auto-update (Turn it off and manually check it every few days in case they pull another OS blunder!).  Haven't gotten one update since then.  Only option, pending their tech, is a reformat and reinstall and not looking forward to that week of work until 10 is out a while and established.  Hope they don't pull out 10.1 and a new key for it like they did with 8.0 > 8.1 where you have to buy a key for 8.1 unless you wipe back to 8.0 if you bought 8.0 at first.

I'll wait and see what happens.  Hopefully it isn't the mess that 8.0>8.1 is.  Started well, but they sure hosed it into a patched up mess.

I also have auto download/update off, they always churn out so many updates, and I've learned early that an update isn't necessarily a good thing lol. Going to wait till I read the first stories on 10, if it's positive, if all software still works properly, etc.

Well if you are worried about that, make sure you create the back up recovery discs before upgrading.  This is the first thing I do with all new work computers.  The backups will have everything to bring it back to factory default set up so no need to get the activiation key.  I've done this once so far with my work desktop computer as an update a few weeks back caused my keyboard and mouse to stop working at login only.

I didn't get any pop ups asking me to upgrade yet.

Older systems can run Windows 10.   Even a Pentium 4   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfu6W6eaWBQ   It will work with 1gb ram as well.   I suspect Windows 10 will be a big hit.   I had some hiccups doing a OTA  update but a second try and it was great.    Windows 10 seems snappy and more responsive the Windows 7 and I notice fewer resources used in task manager.   There is a way it appears to install it on even older hardware.

HOW TO REMOVE:
http://www.ghacks.net/2015/04/17/how-to … s-7-and-8/

I used this CMD command last night to get rid of their sneaky nagware
and promptly contacted Microsoft Customer support personally and left them this message:

"RE: GWX.exe  update: KB3035583

To all Microsoft technicians and any Administrative CEO's responsible on this matter;
Please refrain from utilizing your Windows Customer Security Updates client for
sneak-installation of advertising malware on privately owned personal computers.
You pull enough of that crap every month with fake SKYPE updates that hijack
client browsers and home pages.

Fuck you very much

Have a nice day"

...and that's a quote

Here's the Problem:
Windows 10 Home and Pro: automatic updates could become mandatory

http://www.ghacks.net/2015/05/15/window … mandatory/

Gee, a ? free ? upgrade to windows 10 ~ they've never done that before, what's the catch ?
well ~ free only if you are willing to comply
(no control over updates and device restart on the horizon)
they can install whatever they want into your computer at any time beyond your control...?
uh,  No thanks.

imagine what would happen if every PC user worldwide woke up one day to find their comp systems have been bricked by a erroneous update, which would effectively crash economies overnight by any business PC connected to the internet, and since Microsoft has given the NSA a backdoor into their operating system = that's a security risk on a global scale.

I can see it now = 2018, Introducing Windows 11 automatic upgrade - Welcome to SKYNET ! smile

I accepted the invite because I've heard a little that 10 will be simply wonderful.  Got an email from a friend asking about it and sending me to a forum in which it was being discussed.  There I found a few pros and cons and then went to Windows and their info.

There are a number of things that will not work once you upgrade - media center, games on your computer, and a bunch more.  Made me a little skeptical when I considered that what if one of the things were my external hard drives?  Purchased photo programs?

Canceled my reservation and think I'll just wait for a while until I'm sure.  Can't they just bring back XP?

What's the catch?  The computer can be rigged so that it will not boot anything other than Windows.--  For it's defined lifespan (not your idea of what it's lifespan should be)   You could then be forced to only buy software from the "Microsoft App Store" with whatever licence conditions and fees they can think of..

Microsoft tightens Windows 10's Secure Boot screws: Where does that leave Linux?
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2901262/ … linux.html

"Windows 10 PCs are going to be locked down even tighter than ever before.
Manufacturers will be able enable UEFI Secure Boot without giving you a manual kill switch, as they have to do with Windows 8 systems. If that happens, you’ll only be able to boot Microsoft-approved operating systems on these locked-down PCs."

appreciating the info here on how to get rid of this.

if they want to update software to make it work better or safer, then great, but to use that update process to spam their new product on my computer, that just isn't okay.

Got it. Reserved a copy.

A couple of people I know were involved in the Beta testing. Very good feedback.
