I got a recall notice on one of my cars.
In the event that the passenger airbag deploys it can launch metal shards into the passenger.
Talk about riding shotgun.

I've probably had around 100 members from this site ride in that seat.
Not to mention all my friends.

Scary thought.

The manufacturer will repair it free, just got to take it in.

Takata used Ammonium Nitrate in their inflators - worked fine when new - however after multiple temperature change cycles, especially in higher humidity, cracks and rearrangement occurred that resulted in a more energetic detonation than designed for - which can include the cannister rupturing and metal pieces being ejected. (sometimes with lethal force)

My Honda Element was included in the recall. I got it taken care of a few weeks ago. Took three hours to fix, so I brought a lunch and a good book. They gave me a voucher for a free drink (lemonade) at their cafe. They offered me a shuttle service so I could go to a mall in town to catch a movie.

When they were done with the vehicle, they gave me a list of maintenance they wanted to do... $1500 worth. To their credit, they took "No, thanks," very well.

I had a recall on my airbags as well. (The nearest dealer was 75 miles away and it took all day to fix, so that was a wasted day) When I bought my first car, almost no cars had airbags, so despite some being recalled, I think overall cars are much safer.  Also, a recall doesn't mean all vehicles recalled would necessarily have failed.

No car is safe. Some have known problems, some unknown.

2012 Ford Mustang, so it's on the recall list.

This is not the final round ---

Exclusive: Up to 90 million more Takata airbag inflators may face U.S. recalls
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-autos … SKCN0VV0L6

"pledged to declare all remaining ammonium nitrate inflators defective by 2019 unless it can demonstrate they are safe"

"Takata produced between 260 million and 285 million ammonium nitrate-based inflators worldwide between 2000 and 2015, of which nearly half wound up in U.S. vehicles"

"In company documents, Takata engineers referred to the failures – when exploding inflators ruptured into metal fragments – as "ED," for "energetic disassembly." "

No form of transportation is safe. All have some degree of risk.

you should probably upgrade the safety belts.
I had a friend that got damn near torn in two because of just a lap belt.

sorry to be the one to inform you of this, I believe the fault is with the passenger front airbag.
however we appreciate your research.

probably best to not re-run your test again on the other side since that can be fatal.

how did the drivers side feel?
I've never had an airbag go off on me.

I've never had an airbag go off on me.

I was selling cars back when airbags became mandated.  I have been through countless hours of training relating to the technology.  For 10 years I answered thousands of questions from anxious customers who were afraid of decapitation by airbag.

I would say I was prepared for the actual process of the airbag deployment.... I knew what to expect regarding the pre-tensioner ignition, the smell and the smoke.  But, prepared or not, it's still the stuff of my nightmares. I never want to see another one.

My Ford dealer replaced my Takata airbag with a new one a couple of months ago. Good or bad, I don't know really.

So THATS where the inspiration for your avatar shot came from!  Who knows when an idea will pop (or be driven) into your head. smile

So far, so good for my two.

All of this furor reminds me of a sign on the Pennsylvania Turnpike: "Happyness is never seeing your airbag."

How true.

Ha ha!!! That's a good one... But I can't claim the creative vision for my avatar... I have to give that credit to my wildly talented friend Springheel.

My current car recently got a new driver's side airbag and when they are done replacing those they'll be sending out notices for passenger side airbags. I hope to never see another one that close up again.

Nuts.  Now I've gotta message Springheel and apologize to him.

If you think you have one, definitely follow up on the repair.

A good friend of mine lent her BF use her car, which had one, and he got in an accident. He lost one eye because of flying metal parts from the bag. He isn't just blind in that eye - his entire eyeball had to be removed.

im sorry to hear that.
what a tragic thing to happen to someone.

I think airbags are stupid.  maybe I should disable mine even after the fix

I had a serious crash 14 years ago and my airbag worked fine.
