Is your car safe? Takata Airbag Recalls 14 brands
I got a recall notice on one of my cars. In the event that the passenger airbag deploys it can launch metal shards into the passenger. Talk about riding shotgun. I've probably had around 100 members from this site ride in that seat. Not to mention all my friends. Scary thought. The manufacturer will repair it free, just got to take it in. http://www.safercar.gov/rs/takata/ Feb 20 16 08:20 pm Link Takata used Ammonium Nitrate in their inflators - worked fine when new - however after multiple temperature change cycles, especially in higher humidity, cracks and rearrangement occurred that resulted in a more energetic detonation than designed for - which can include the cannister rupturing and metal pieces being ejected. (sometimes with lethal force) Feb 20 16 10:17 pm Link Fortunately neither of my cars are on the list. Feb 21 16 12:02 am Link Jim Shibley wrote: Not yet. Feb 21 16 04:30 am Link Safest there is! Feb 21 16 05:33 am Link My Honda Element was included in the recall. I got it taken care of a few weeks ago. Took three hours to fix, so I brought a lunch and a good book. They gave me a voucher for a free drink (lemonade) at their cafe. They offered me a shuttle service so I could go to a mall in town to catch a movie. When they were done with the vehicle, they gave me a list of maintenance they wanted to do... $1500 worth. To their credit, they took "No, thanks," very well. Feb 21 16 07:57 am Link Mine are all "safe", they don't even have radios ta distract me . . . SOS Feb 21 16 10:44 am Link I had a recall on my airbags as well. (The nearest dealer was 75 miles away and it took all day to fix, so that was a wasted day) When I bought my first car, almost no cars had airbags, so despite some being recalled, I think overall cars are much safer. Also, a recall doesn't mean all vehicles recalled would necessarily have failed. Feb 21 16 11:13 am Link No car is safe. Some have known problems, some unknown. Feb 21 16 01:24 pm Link 2012 Ford Mustang, so it's on the recall list. Feb 21 16 03:26 pm Link This is not the final round --- Exclusive: Up to 90 million more Takata airbag inflators may face U.S. recalls http://www.reuters.com/article/us-autos … SKCN0VV0L6 "pledged to declare all remaining ammonium nitrate inflators defective by 2019 unless it can demonstrate they are safe" "Takata produced between 260 million and 285 million ammonium nitrate-based inflators worldwide between 2000 and 2015, of which nearly half wound up in U.S. vehicles" "In company documents, Takata engineers referred to the failures – when exploding inflators ruptured into metal fragments – as "ED," for "energetic disassembly." " Feb 22 16 06:01 am Link neither of mine have air bags.. or 3 point seat belts for that matter Feb 22 16 01:04 pm Link Bob Helm Photography wrote: No form of transportation is safe. All have some degree of risk. Feb 22 16 02:31 pm Link goofus wrote: you should probably upgrade the safety belts. Feb 23 16 08:13 am Link I checked mine out already. On my head. Feb 23 16 08:37 am Link MoRina wrote: sorry to be the one to inform you of this, I believe the fault is with the passenger front airbag. For 10 years I answered thousands of questions from anxious customers who were afraid of decapitation by airbag. Feb 23 16 01:37 pm Link *bump-update* Just got a letter last week that parts are available and I scheduled an appointment for replacement. Oct 10 16 09:10 am Link My Ford dealer replaced my Takata airbag with a new one a couple of months ago. Good or bad, I don't know really. Oct 11 16 10:33 am Link So far, so good for my two. All of this furor reminds me of a sign on the Pennsylvania Turnpike: "Happyness is never seeing your airbag." How true. Oct 11 16 02:46 pm Link If you think you have one, definitely follow up on the repair. A good friend of mine lent her BF use her car, which had one, and he got in an accident. He lost one eye because of flying metal parts from the bag. He isn't just blind in that eye - his entire eyeball had to be removed. Oct 17 16 02:10 pm Link MerrillMedia wrote: holy fuck!
