Got me a new puter (Windows 10), and its default browser is MSN.  MSN is not too bad for a home page:

Good points:
...  I like that there are "live tiles", flashing images & news stories.
...  I like that there is a lot of tiles.

Bad points:
...  Extremely limited customization.
...  Too many "Microsoft centric" items popping up.

I've been using Protopage, which is static but nice.  What I would want:
...  Ability to track weather in 4-5 cities,
...  Ability to track a half dozen stocks.
...  Ability to select / configure what kind of stories I want to show up.
...  Ability to avoid ads (I use AdBlock)

Any suggestions?

Eh I use Google for a homepage. I use apps on my phone for weather and news. Yahoo used to be good for what you're looking for. Now it's terrible.

Write your own (which can reside on the local hard drive) for the custom links

Drop something like one of the  www.thedailyhomepages.com/  pages into a frame for more links

I use my own web site as my home page.  My home page is my home page. LOL  I have a menu page of links that I could use as my home page.

But most of my time is spent on MM and a news site.

I use Excite.com as my homepage.  Has about 18 weather locations I've selected and a bunch of forums loaded too.  Pretty customizable.

Not a fan of Yahoo! or Google at all.  Too much data mining and ads and my att.net email (My slow-poke DSL) uses Yahoo! for their email since AT&T got out of their own sever biz along with Worldnet for websites, Newsnet, etc.  Yahoo! seems bent on pushing a ton of spam on me and I think they allow it unless you pay for an upgraded pro service.  I get about 20 crap emails on "You got money, millions. Nigerian stuff. Etc.) whereas with Excite I don't see it or very few with my email there (i.e. Excite maybe 1 a week, against about 20 a day in Yahoo!).

Not to pick on you in particular, but...
...  Where do you gather the top news stories?
...  Where do you get weather reports for your favorite 4-6 cities?
...  Where go you get news stories on...
     ---  your favorite sports teams?
     ---  your favorite celebrities?
     ---  tech news?
     ---  etc.
...  Where do you go for a joke of the day?
...  Where do you go for local movie start times?
...  Where do you go to find your favorite links?

And so forth?  I like a busy home page.

I guess mine probably isn't the best example for your purposes, but here goes.

Where do you gather the top news stories?

I get wind of most news via social media. I don't feel that I miss out on much (at all), and I don't follow anyone that annoys me.

Where do you get weather reports for your favorite 4-6 cities?

I wrote a nifty perl script that lives on my mailserver. If I want a news report I just send an email to a special address with a comma separated list of zip codes and it replies with the forecast. I'm usually too lazy even for that these days. If I start typing my zip code into my browser, weather.com is always the first result.

Where go you get news stories on...
     ---  your favorite sports teams?
     ---  your favorite celebrities?
     ---  tech news?
     ---  etc.

I follow all the organizations I care about on social media, they're all generally very on the ball about keeping their pages updated.

Where do you go for a joke of the day?

The mirror -_-

Where do you go for local movie start times?

Mooo vee? Vat is this?

Where do you go to find your favorite links?

I use a Firefox extension called vimperator. It hacks up the browser interface and makes everything ridiculously easy and intuitive to anyone that finds the vi text editor easy and intuitive >_<
