I found the website DogsBite.org which has a bunch of numbers, but they're also skewed to the victims of dog bites, so I don't know how objective they are. Having a new German Shepherd puppy, now five-months-old, I can personally tell you the hazards of a dog's bite. Luckily, he's outgrowing this phase, but it can be pure hell-on-earth if I happen to grab at one of his toys at the same time he is. At least he's learned bite inhibition, so as soon as he realizes there's more to his toy than should be, he lets go. But just in case, I keep an extra roll of paper towels around to soak up the blood and an abundant supply of band-aids.  My wife's brother lives in Matawan, NJ and has a house "down the shore" in Bayhead. When we visit, I still think of the shark attacks in 1916 which killed four people, but I'll still get in the water. I used to divemaster, and while scuba diving off the island of Guanaja, came face-to-face with a 7' bull shark. We looked at each other and went our separate ways. But, there's sharks, whales, and killer whales, which ironically are a member of the dolphin family, all with a few hundred feet of the shore. Kinda makes you wonder huh? I live two blocks from my favorite surf point and I'll tell you, in the 35 years here, other than the skittish and tiny tooth leopard shark, I have YET to see a great white, not to say we've hadn't our share of offshore sightings where the officials would close (deter) water access for 48 hours. The basic rule of thumb is don't swim near their food source, aka; sealions and harbor seals. If you see a group of them near your beach I would think twice, especially if they suddenly beach themselves because they are escaping danger.
