Due to a recent accident with new 5 month old car (Freightiiner truck rear-ended us while stopped and bashed up $12K worth of stuff, while his truck's fan went through the radiator.  Logistics driver on cell phone or laptop looking for delivery point.) I am thinking having one might prove that we were stopped by photographing the cars stopped ahead of us proving we did not swerve in front of him or whatever excuse they could dream up.  I try and avoid the lawyer thing as many I know who get into that mess take months or years to settle out while waiting for vehicles to get fixed - as if the wait adds onto the lawyer's bill so nothing moves quickly.

Surprised to read Russia uses them a lot more than USA.  Given that the CHP in CA has seen a huge rise in tickets for going over 100 MPH (over 2K a month!) since the coronavisrus outbreak and streets are somewhat deserted.  Lots of homeless, and many on old bicycles or pushing their shopping carts, are weaving into traffic and completely ignoring traffic laws so it might not be a bad idea to have one.

Anyone with one have a particular like or dislike about their unit?

Thought about a 180 or 360 view.  Or two 120s.  Showing if side street traffic stopped or other vehicle swerved.   Hasn't happened in a while, but there has been more than one occasion where someone passed me, often illegally, moved in front and slammed on the breaks.

The ones in Russia get some cool footage of accidents as they happen.  I seem to recall some caught that meteor coming down.

If there's a lawsuit it doesn't prevent you getting your own vehicle fixed. Your insurance fixes your vehicle and then they get reimbursed from the at-fault party.

In a collision with a commercial vehicle, you will likely be called by the company's lawyer, insurance company or risk manager and asked to sign a release from all claims in return for a decent size check that covers your car repairs plus extra for signing that release instead of suing.

I just went through a car accident this past November. Not a great experience no matter what but if you got rear ended like I did then most likely the vehicle behind you is at fault. I had the car just a few months off the dealership. The guy try to drive away but my car was still drivable and gave chase to get his license plate number and return to the scene of the accident. The police later went to his house and got his information and saw the damage of his vehicle. I directly call his insurance company and they got hold of the report. My car was fixed and I got free of charge a rental car for 2 weeks. He got lucky I was not physically hurt because the insurance company would had to payout big time. Thats one of the first things they ask. In these cases a lawyer is useful.

Isn't this what you pay for auto insurance to handle ?

It's not your job to worry about what possible excuse, if any, the other driver might come up with.
He hit you from the rear . . . with a big truck, no less . . . you're lucky to be alive . . . it could be worse.

The police, while doing their investigation, will usually measure skid marks, take statements from onlookers and gather other forensic evidence. There's probably no need for footage that doesn't actually show the collision.

That being said . . . if you really like the idea of a cam in your car, get one . . . they're fairly cheap and the quality is basically ok.

I had one for a couple of years and the only thing of interest I documented were the two times a deer ran out on the road in front of me and got away just in the nick of time. You should have seen their expressions !

As far as the Russians go . . . they drive like crazy people and the car cam footage I've seen on TV is rather amusing.

I use a Vantru Pro N2 and it came in handy when a guy ran a red light and t-boned me. It's come in handy a couple of times in the 3 years I've had it.

Once, a lady hit and ran on me and it caught her license plate. Another time a guy ran a red light and t-boned me and tried saying he had the green light.

Thanks for the info John on the Vantru Pro N2.

I've had people blow through stop signs and almost t-bone me.  I could see its usefulness there.

A woman I know had some guy make a right turn in front of her from the middle lane of a multi-lane road and both going in same direction.  She hit him as she was in far right lane when he crossed in front of her.  It's been a legal mess with lawyers for a couple of months and she still has her bashed up car.  One kid was sent to hospital which complicates the matter.

As far as CA goes, often if non-injuries and cars can be moved off to the side of the road, the cops will not show up.  The 911 person will tell you to exchange ID and insurance paperwork, take photos, and take it up with your insurance carrier.

So far, I've been very impressed with the Auto Club of So. CA.  A rental was waiting for me while at the collision center and good for a month.  They also do the SR1 Accident filing with the CA DMV since they have a DMV outlet in many offices.  The claims person has called me a couple of times and even checked on the parts availability for any back-orders along with a ETA on the repair completion (27 days.).  They may waive my $1K deductible depending on the other's insurance.  We'll see...

I was looking at the Escort M1 dash cam that ties into their radar detectors, but it will not work with my model 9500xi for some reason (Power cord on wrong side perhaps.).  I have four radar detectors in three vehicles and they have paid for themselves many times over.  My barber got ticketed for only 2 over and went to court to fight it, but it cost her $200 plus a 60 mile trip to court and traffic judge said "If she wanted to fight it further and come back and waste the court's time, it would be $400."  She paid the $200.

With me, if the cop pulls an instant-on, one of the detectors will pick it up 3 miles distant.  I learned this from Marysville to Sacramento at 4 AM and he was just lone headlights in the distance, but the detector told me who it was with the Ka alert.  Against laser they are not so good, but given they need a clear shot and not through their car's window with laser most will not roll their windows down in the desert heat and lose their A/C so they use the Ka band Stalker unit instead which operates through glass which I pick up.  A fourth unit picks up their plane's transponder so I can find the air police as well.
Can't have too little situational awareness these days, imho.

Rear and collusions are pretty cut and dry, same with stop signs almost 100% fault.
there are other cases where they can help.
years ago a friend was driving and was involved in a head on and was lucky to live thru it. He had no recollection of what happened. Fortunately there was a witness that saw the other car swerved into his lane. A dash cam would have helped had there not been a witness. OTOH I believe it can be used as evidence against you if you are at fault , not a biggie if all that is at stake is only property damage but can be if people are injured.
