New York City are === I'm considering doing body painting again. Last time I did it, all the models were great and we had SUPER time. Right now I'm trying to gage the interest. Of course the shoot is mostly implied. But it's not for everyone. It's just that model is 100% nude in front of the photog (me - lol) and the paint is applied all over her body including the private areas. That takes a bit getting used to. That's why I say it's not for everyone. It's not the pictures. It's the PROCESS. Standing nude in front of a guy you don't know while he's apply paint is knida invasion in a way. It's totally professional - just unusual. After it's applied though, I get the same reaction from all the models. They feel amazing and they all love that they look amazing. I agree that most models I've talked to that have been bodypainted seem to enjoy the final result, but I've never heard it described as "an invasion" before. One of these days I'd love to paint in NY, you guys have a really happening art scene there. And some great models in the area too! Sep 08 05 04:54 am Link so let me get this straight? you apply the body paint and then you also shoot? if i was a model, i'd be a little leary of that cuz usually its another professional body painter/artist doing that, and they're usually female. im sort of from the school of "the First baseman Plays first", that is he doesnt pitch, coach third, manage, argues with umpire, or calls the pitches. if you want to paint, then paint, if you want to shoot then shoot, but generally its not a good idea to do both and even when the guy has some body painter skills, he usuallly calls in a female friend to apply the paint. again, cuz for that shoot he is the photographer, and he's in the photog mindset, not the body painter mindset but hey, if you can do both, and save a few bucks, and you can get some models to go along with that idea, then good for you Sep 08 05 06:33 am Link Chili wrote: Chili....I tend to agree with your post. Sep 08 05 10:04 am Link i havent done too many body painting shoots, but i had 2 points point 1: was you shouldnt try to do everything at the same time, you cant see the whole game stradegy if you're the quarterback, being a "player/manager" never seems to work point 2: when you are dealing with more or less amateur models, (and if you are more or less an unknown amatuer painter, or at least to them an unknown painter) it generally makes them more comfortable (and more sense?) if the person who is putting their hands all over them is another woman now when ive shot a nude girl who was totally painted, i positioned her in front of a piece of grafetti, and then the "artist" re-created the mural on her body, to almost give that illusion sort of like "the predator" coming out of the wall/mural, i just didnt think one person could have done/coordinated all of that properly now obviously if you are just painting the girl one solid colour (like in goldfinger) then yeah, i suppose any jaboney can do that, just slap on one coat of paint, like a tom sawyer painting a fence Sep 08 05 11:28 am Link i think body painting is creepy in the first place. looks to gimmickie. dont see the point when you have photo shop now a days. you throw that with being a photographer you just doubled your creep factor. But maybe it's to each their own - maybe it takes a model who's comfortable with their body, trusts the painter and photographer that it will be tastefully done, and a model who loves art and has an active imagination - and remembers what pretending was like as a child... As far as photoshop goes...that is a laugh. I've yet to see anyone who can get the same effect and my clients for live events would disagree. It's like photoshopping regular makeup...sure it can be done, but why when you can hire a decent MUA? Somethings many people don't realize: -there is archeological evidence going back 400,000 years that is thought by historians to be evidence of makeup/bodypaint -bodypainting has been practiced worldwide at some point or another in almost every culture -bodypainting has been used ceremonially in birth, presentation of infants to communities, puberty, marriage, war, and death rites in many cultures world wide -bodypainting as an artform has been gaining momentum and acceptance for the last 20 years Some people may indeed be creeped out by it...I get creeped out by the whole "biomechanical" thing. But bodypainting is a growing trend. My main concern is that models and newbie "painters" learn the difference between safe and unsafe. Sep 08 05 02:09 pm Link I want to be bodypainted so bad! Sep 08 05 03:14 pm Link Wow Thanks for all these different perspectives. Photoshop is the greatest image editor ever invented but believe it or not - it can;t do everything. As far as doing the painting myself, I've learned that many times the notion that to get something done you have to it yourself often reigns true - not all the time but boy does it save money. Also there is a trust factor as well. I understand as well as anyone that here is a professional factor and and comfort factor ans everything like but believe or not one of the reasons i sometimes do it myself is because I can't get anyone whom I can trust to it. If I'm organizing this thing and i get a pervy painter (unbeknownst to me) I will the blame. I can;t afford to have my rep ruined. If the model is uncomfortable -we wont shoot -it's simple. A good photographer must always respect limits. Lastly very projects give me the such intriguing results a B Paint /// TONY Sep 08 05 06:55 pm Link cool to see so many different thoughts on bodypainting. in a nutshell... i'm a bodypainter, and i take my own pics. for me, it keeps one concept together thru the whole process. professionalism is the bottom line--gender has never been an issue. there are people that do things for the wrong reasons, but that's everywhere. yep, the models typically love the process. i've had models leave shoots fully painted so they could go home and show their whoever... anyway, you guys do great stuff. glad i found MM. I have never had a shortage of volenteers ... and it does produce commercially viable images not to mention people do sit up and take notice of your work ... only MUA availability stops me from doing more Just for the sake of comfort levels I rarely work bodypaint shoots with new models mainly due to prolonged nudity with a crew around I only ever did my own bodypainting once and that was with a model that was a "very" close friend ... I guess the only real tip is dont let the paintjob surpass the photography .. so many times I have seen wonderful designs spoiled by dull flat glamour lighting ... nothing works better on paint than diffused natural sunlight, a net curtain makes the best diffuser ... good luck with the project shooting bodypaint is a passion of mine Sep 09 05 05:10 pm Link I love the paint!! I have been the painter and the painted and I can understand how some people might get uncomfortable. However, I tend to agree that being the painter and the photog can be a very good idea when you have a picture in your head of what you are trying to create and have to leave such an important piece of it to someone else, well, I just agree that if you want it done right, do it yourself. At least for people who dont' have trusted photog/painter relationships with others who would qualify for what you are trying to accomplish. I say go for it! Kaire Sep 09 05 05:47 pm Link I have done quite a few body painting sessions and in the end it just comes down to professionalism. If you are painting someone of the opposite sex you make sure you have an assistant of the same sex to apply paint to the more "personal" areas or at least observe the session so there is no doubt that things are being done professionally. There are always going to be creepy photogs out there- common sense and a chaperone should help you to avoid most of them! Good to see the others in this post, I have seen you work before, good job guys! I apply the paints myself, never looked at it as a creep factor issue, just part of an artist process. But is there a special media or watercolor? I've done airbrushing for Motocycles ad various other things but dont want to do eurathane on models. I used greasepaint before but was basically permanant until it wore off... Made some dancers quiet un-happy. Any suggestions? Sep 11 05 08:03 pm Link you should go to a pro or theatrical makeup shop. online, you can go direct to mehron or kryolan. temptu also has good stuff. get a water-based pigment [v. easy clean up]. brush vs airbrush is your preference of application tool. [no go on the eurethane!!] have fun with it...
