The most important skill a model can have is the ability to spot a scam.

I got through the first two posts on this forum and realized very few models must read it. Don't get me wrong- it is EXCELLENT and it should be required reading for anyone new. With a FOUR digit membership number, I guess you could say I have been around here quite a while and have seen so many models make so many mistakes. I don't agree with everything stated up front, but all are entitled to their opinions. The important thing is that all members here should use MM as a learning tool and realize that this is a very tough business, and you just can't please all the people all the time.

One rule I didn't see posted here (and I just found out the HARD way!):

Don't post anything that says "vote for me," not even in the off-topic forum. People get really pissy.

Sorry to anyone I offended! I know the rule now!

I agree.  Reducing the level of snarkiness would allow people to take MM seriously.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting this.  It's nice to see the "unwritten" rules before I start venturing around the site.

People take models.com plenty seriously and they are like rabid hyenas if you misstep in those forums.

Understand that your real world experience is not going to immediately transform into MM respect. Ten, twenty, thirty years in the business is certainly impressive, but if you spout off in your first post, you are still going to be treated like a punk.

MM is like any community... your reputation here is built on your actions here, not on what you did in your 'prior' life.

This isn't AIM.

Your screen name can be blueangel333 or davesgurl4eva, but this is a networking site, and your name should be want you want to be known as in the industry.

No kidding... Seriously!!!
Does the OP have nothing better to do?
That wasn't the usual rant you read on here.
That load took some time to create!

If more people worried about themselves as much as they do others, the world would be a much better place.

(Ok, MM would be a better place at the very least!)

The OP has been working on this a while. It wasn't like he just sat down one day and typed it all out. He made the outline, and we all added to it.

If at all possible
avoid getting an angry mob after you
https://modelmayhem.com/p.php?thread_id=158746
while it gives everyone here on MM something to do for a while
it demonstrates a total lack of class (and often talent)

1. check out newmodels.com

2. have real expectations and be ready to work really hard for a few years/months (depending on number of shoots).

3. know that there are probably another million girls with similar, if not better, qualifications. what separate you from the rest is your attitude. a positive attitude goes a long way.

4. search the forum before posting a new thread. stay away from the forum for the first few weeks just to get a feel of who is nice and who is not.

5. have fun and enjoy. don't take anything too seriously.

Here's an example of what NOT to post in the forum:
https://modelmayhem.com/posts.php?thread_id=131368

The result is angry bunny-mod stumping on you. It's way worse than having wolves tear you apart.

While you have the freedom to choosing who to work with, it is unwise to insult the ones you don't want to work with. Respect what other people do, and they'll be more likely to respect yours.

Oh my! ^^
wow...
Anyway, Hi everyone! I'm Miko, by the way. heh.
This survival guide really helped me understand a lot of stuff I had seen every now and then on the site the past couple months. Thanks so much!!
