She's really not one either.  At most, a size 8, which is very small for a plus model.

ok, so how are they going to market her as plus size if she doesn't fit the clothes?

I'm short, and I never paid for any of my pictures, and have been paid for several. Sometimes I respond to castings here or Craigslist, or else Im approached.

your lucky though, you live in califlonia. new york and califlonia have the best craigslist stuff. everywhere else is like porn, nude, fetish, sexy maxim stuff, and lingerie.

my sister does a few promo jobs off of that site though.

What if you do really well in this modeling thing and have to travel and move around a lot? Are you planning on doing this long term if you find out you actually do have what it takes?

thats good about the studio job being flexible though.

That's not what I'm talking about.  I would love to travel, as long as I have a steady pay check and a warm home waiting for me.

More like a six (I'm assuming, since the largest pant size I wear is a 4)

I was thinking that.  They didn't say anything about gaining weight.  In fact, I mentioned that I was on a diet and they didn't seem to have a problem with it, the only thing they said was that they'll know if I'm not eating.  I don't think it's going to be much of a problem because given my figure, my weight doesn't really fall below 130.  One problem that I may have is that my weight seems to change a lot.

if your weight is 130 and you are 5'10 then you are only 10 lbs too heavy for straight modeling and nowhere near close enough for plus size.  frankly i have no idea why they actually signedy ou then.  you won't fit the clothes.  the castings you've gone to, have they had you try on clothes? did it fir?

i wouldnt worry about signing exclusively...most do and its not a bad decision if they are getting you work...i started out freelancing and having one agency, in my opinion, is much better. it says you're committed to this person and that means they are probably willing to do more for you because of that..you're a team..but one thing you should realize is its your career and they work for you

What was your initial investment into modeling, getting your portfolio and whatever else you needed to actually get signed??

I know they say you should never pay a company to get you out there and what not, but I've also heard that to get yourself out there requires a lot of investment of time and money.

How much does it really cost you, before you start actually making?

I've never paid anyone, for anything. Trade only.
So I guess I have only profited. See no reason a talented model should have to do otherwise, unless she's signed to an agency.

I can easily see why. I approached a lady in her late 30's a month ago and she had what I would call a chisled face structure.  She was definately pissed off.

Just read the OP's profile, and the rest of the thread.

What may be normal weight to thin in the real world is NOT in modeling. The camera truly does add ten pounds, and that's coming from a glamour model who can afford to weight much more than you could inch to weight (didn't say that right...I was weight 105-120 and be fine, since my curves are whats being sold not the clothes).

So be glamour, or lose weight. Or gain! And be plus. I think you could be a good plus model, actually. You remind me of my friend.

nope, they didn't make me try on anything. I'm not 130, I'm around 134-8.

When I first started modelling as a teen my initial investment for two photoshoots ( as well as classes that didn't get me work but were still fun) was about a thousand dollars.

Since I got back into it a couple months ago, I haven't really spent anything. I did buy some clothing and makeup for shoots obvioulsy but it was all stuff I use in my daily life and probably would have bought anyways.

But the way they explained it to me, I only pay back if and when I get work.  Work I would not recieve without their backing.  It's not like I'm going to some random studio, paying hundreds of dollars just to continue looking for work myself.

In most cases your agency contract will stipulate that in the event your cost to be promoted are not covered by your model income they have the ability to bill you. Also if you don't pay in many contracts there is a clause that states that they can bring legal proceeding against you and you will be responsible for those attorney and filing fees on top of the original debt. now it's been a while since I did commercial work but I doubt the agents got nicer. Do you have a copy of your contract? you should read it fully..though prior to signing would have been a better time to have done so.

Biana babe...

Ok first of all you need to change your mindset about EVERYTHING!!!

I just read this enitre thread and you need to start thinking of it as "I have been signed by a well known agency and they signed me for a reason.  They are working for ME!!!"

You got signed by a great agency.  They work for you, not the other way around.  You need to remember that and tell yourself that.

If you walk into a casting thinking that you aren't going to get it...chances are....you won't.  The clients who are looking for models do not want a model who doesn't believe in herself.  Or a model who is already thinking about when she wants her career to end.  They want someone who can sell their product.  You need to walk into a casting like you are the SHIT!!!!!  Like you already have the job.  That doesn't mean be cocky.  That doesn't mean act full of yourself....it just means go in there knowing you are beautiful and that if they offered you the job, that you could do it.  Because you can.  You are gorgeous.  That is why you were signed.

You have not been given anything.  EVERYTHING that the agency is "giving" you will be paid back. Whether they pay for tests, for contact sheets, for your portfolio, for a plane ticket, anything...if you receive anything from an agency trust that you will be paying it back.

If you want to make sure you get castings, you need to spend your time going to them!!!  If you are lucky enough to be still living at home, focus your spare time now on accepting any and every casting call you get!!!  You can't book castings if you don't go to them.

I never pay to do a shoot, and sometimes i do get paid.. but since i live 2 hours from either portland or seattle, it costs me at least $30 in gas, then parking tickets which i seem to be getting quite often.. lol and paying a sitter. But, it will all pay off soon.. i hope lol

eh it's prolly about evened out and i'll be asking for my gas to always be paid from now on. I think i've done enough free shoots to at least ask for 20-30 to help me out.. i dunno though it really depends on the photog to tell you the truth.

A point of reference:  Not all that many years ago, Steven Meisel didn't own a camera or a studio.  It's entirely possible that he doesn't own either now.  He just rents them as needed.  No investment in equipment at all.  And yet somehow he gets all those Vogue editorials . . . .

I just want to make a point that everyone seems to miss, you dont have to be like 5'8 plus to be a model you need to be 5'8 plus to be a CATWALK model. Agencies that deal with high fashion and catwalks will reject ppl under that height but glamour is not the only other type of modeling.

I mean take really old people that appear in loads of adverts etc, they're hardly gonna be in the same agency as get moss but that dont mean they dont have an agency at all. People below 5'8 arent good at nothing except getting their boobs out!!!!

Hee!!  big_smile
