We obviously know that nude models have to be over 18. But, can the photographer be UNDER 18...? [I'm not talking 12, more like 16 or 17]

I'd think the photog would have to be 18+ for nudes as well...

It's like a 16 year old tryin to buy porn, smokes, or anything else requiring an 18+ I.D.
I'd imagine it to be illegal but I'm not a lawyer... smile

Tread lightly. You will be 18 soon enough. There is a lot to learn about settings, exposures, timing and creating an idea first, so concentrate on those qualities and when you turn 18 you'll be ready for all that lies ahead.

Nude models don't have to be 18. They do need to be 18 if the shots are to be lewd (naughty). Of course you need to look into your local state laws.

This subject has been discussed over and over. There are famous photographers/photos displaying tasteful nudes in galleries of under 18 models. (See Jock Sturges)

There are tons of shots of under 18  models that are dressed in zippered lingerie that are way more sexually overt than fine art nudes.

As to being a photographer under 18, why not ? The only problem I can see is making sure your parents are OK and not going to blow-up.

Only because this thread is about to be filled with a LOT of misinformation, this response needed to be quoted.

Lucian, thanks for beating me to it.  You phrased it much better than I would have.

heh heh, this is great!!! You should photograph naked 60+ aged men and do a gallery exhibition depicting their "moments of transition and metamorphosis" into old fossils.

hmmmm, I'm pretty sure photography students would have taken nudes during their course, usually starting out at around 16/17, at least in Australia. or those doing photography during high school.

as long as they aren't pornography, artistic nudes should be ok?

One of my fave photo books. Is this photographer who took photos of fat, naked women. Everything. Wrinkles, rolls, quadruple chins. But they were good photos. My friends were disgusted. They were like "GET THAT AWAY FROM ME" but it was very creative. Though, to scare them, I throw that book in front of their faces.

You don't have to be 18 to pose nude. Just to pose in sexually provocative ways, clothed or not.

Contact a non profit legal aid office, or maybe a law school professor. A professor may get a kick out of the subject and use it in one of his classes to start a debate.

I'm kind of new to the photo world, but I think, at least in Cali, you might get some raised eyebrows on the subject. I guess, if your guardians were around for the shoot it would be ok. As for underage nudes...Jock Sturges has some amazing photographs...but the FBI came knocking on his door as a result of some of those pictures... :-/

I'd almost be willing to work with you just to piss off all the right people who think it is wrong...

I am 99% sure there is no law stating how old the PHOTOGRAPHER has to be to shoot nudes...

you dont have to be 18, but i would imagine all the crazies out there that would try to get the model tossed in jail.  just image if it was an older nude male model and a 17yo girl photographer.  it'd be on faux news 24/7

Probably depends on the state; I'd worry most about the model getting "contributing to the deliquency of a minor"

~There is a 17 year old female photographer on here who has male nudes in her port. They are outstanding by the way.~

What does it matter the subject matter - if the photographer is under 18, they can't sign a modeling release or any other legal contract.  So why would a model over 18 want to have nudes shot by someone under 18?

There are many schools across America with students under the age of 18 doing figure drawings, painting and photography.  So I guess if it's OK in schools, why not. So long as it's an art form and not porn.

Well, one thing is for sure, she'll be getting some great help, by some pretty amazing artists...I personally would be terrified trying to shoot you, unless I had more experience under my belt :-)

you don't have to be 18+ to do nudes, either as model or photographer.  You just need to be 18+ sign the contract.

Truth.

On MM, you must be 18 to be depicted in nudes, but not by law.

If 16 year-olds are allowed to draw my nude body in their art classes, I bet they're allowed to take pictures of it too.
