Do you agree with this definition of "GWC?"

GWC -Guy With Camera

Commonly used in the modeling/photographer biz, 'GWC' is any poser/creep with a digital camera pretending to be a pro/semi-pro photographer. With the introduction of digital cameras, GWC's have appeared like an explosion in a toy store.

GWC's typically steal the work of others and don't have any references.

Well the model I am doing a shoot with tomorrrow had one on her last shoot, it was going fine until he pulled a g string out of his kit bg and asked her to put it on and go topless, when it clearly states on her profile that  she does not do that type of modeling.

Needless to say she left in a hurry

Thats a GWC

I know I'm a newbie so I'm placing myself at risk of ridicule here, but I think that sometimes the term is used to loosely. There are guys out there who buy cameras just to photograph women. They range from perverts to Playboy photographers. However, I think your definition is probably the closest to how I perceive the term.

A couple of years ago I contacted a model to ask if she was interested in working on some photos for our portfolios. I don't know what I said wrong but I assure you all I made no sexual references, no insinuations that I was looking for a date, nor was I even wanting to do nudes or even swimwear. She emailed me back and said that I was just a GWC and to leave her alone. Not being very savvy, I didn't know what a GWC was so I asked the question on another popular forum. Man, did I open up a can of worms! I was roasted in there! I earned the GWC name and could not shake it. The only reason it stuck is because I had just quit my job as a photojournalist and wanted to branch into commercial photography. I had worked with three models and only had three photos posted at the time. So, because I did not have an extensive portfolio I was labeled a GWC. I had worked as a pro photographer for years but in another field.

So I think that we might ought to take it easy on the beginners and not throw that label out too quickly. Models should always be on guard to stay safe and if something does not feel right, don't shoot with a photog. But don't label him with that unless it is clear he deserves it.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm glad to see the issue discussed. Thanks for posting that.

We're all voyers. We all start out somewhere. Some models start out too with some craziness. Check ports.  Is there any manipulated shots? Any Photoshop?  Paint.net?  Hell's bells, Corel?  Any creative license applied at all? Or does it look like a disposable pulled out at a BBQ?

A true perv keeps it to themself. Even a quack dreamer will go out on the limb.

"So many times it happens so fast you , you change your passion for glory...." Eye of the Tiger - Survivor - get it or get out! OK.  Its 80's corny, but it rings true.

Why wouldnt you call a Playboy Photographer a GWC.
He's a Creep, obviously got into the bizz to take pics of naked girls.
and i wouldnt be suprised if he has screwed a few of the models he's shot.

so whats the diff.

now if someone is actually steeling photo's and calling them his own...then he's not a GWC...he's a thief.

While GWC is used on many sites to mean simply "guy with camera" with the implication that he may not have much skill or professionalism, the Model Mayhem usage is a little stricter:-

https://www.modelmayhem.com/faqs.php?fa … =22&link=1

Basically, if you call someone a GWC here you are accusing him of only being interested in seeing naked women for his own pleasure and using his camera as a prop to facilitate that. By this definition, a GWC might actually have excellent photography skills, but if his motivation for taking photos is only to get women naked then he's a GWC regardless of the quality of his work.

I'm a GWC, i have very little experience in taking picz, i didn't attend any photography school... but i always tell to my models that i'm not a pro!
And, above all, i don't ask for sex or any kind of dating.
By the way, i have a photoblog with backstage picz, landscapes and journalistic picz. Pageviews: 7000
Another GWC (girl with camera) is posting her nude selfpicz. Pageviews: 400.000
I think i'm gonna work with naked models for a while...

None of these statements have anything to do with the term GWC.  A GWC label has nothing to do with quality of work, references, stealing images, or any of the above.

A GWC is simply someone who doesn't care about the image making process, he takes pictures for the single purpose of getting in the company of the object of his desire.  He can be very talented and produce fantastic work and still be a GWC, depending on his true reason for producing that fantastic work.

So no, I don't agree with your definition.

Dear EffetoNeve,

I don't think your skill level has anything to do with your GWC status.  It's your intent. What you see when you look at a model.

There are photogs who have never attended any formal training, and yet their work appeared in popular photo mags.  Anyone can take a picture. Not everyone's an artist.  Keep it up.

keep on rockin on,

Isn't that website you list just a compilation of people posting with their own definitions of things?  How would that be considered accurate?

I didn't look up GWC but apparently somebody who didn't know what the hell they were talking about popped a definition in there.

I think it's fair to do some autocritic, sometimes... and guess what? When i see real models, they seem normal girls... but when i look them in my picz, they're really charming...
Still have doubts on GWC definition, 'cause i love to work with no-shame girls (who doesn't?) but i love also to share the emotions i feel when i realize the picz smile
So, what's the equation?

Nude girls + no skills + sharing emotions = NO GWC

Dressed girls + good skills + no share (only reason is to stay with the model) = GWC

Do you agree?

GWC guy with camera, the guy with camera thinks with his prick, this is reflected in the images he shoots, he may or may not try to bed the models he works with but there is always a box of tissues by his computer, a GWC might steal images or claim someone is stealing theirs, anything for sympathy, smart GWC's learn to take a picture real well to lure prettier models but is not into the art and often are one trick ponys... all photographers are potintial GWC's

I don't think there's really an equation. One question might be though, "does the subject take away from the composition as a whole?"  You could put majestic Mt Everest in the background but if Jenna Jameson is spreading her legs, nobody is looking at the mountain.  Once again, some people see photography as a catalyst for meeting chicks or satisfying their own perversions.  Others see it as a means to express themselves or where they see the beauty in people/places/things .  And of course others are just $$ -
