Anybody use these?  At $35, they are cheaper than even sync cords.  Probably a "you get what you pay for" situation?

I have a bunch of them. They are okay out of the box... but can be much better for a couple of dollars.

First: I think they may mention this in the manuals now, but the battery that comes in the transmitter is only strong enough for test. You should realize more reliability with a fresh battery.

Second: Antenna mod!!! Obviously, if you increase distance, reliability will come with it. I talk about the mod I did to my (three). http://www.shanemcdowell.com/post_detail.php?post_id=15

They will never beat a set of Pocket Wizards, but you can have a case of them around for fun or backup and still not spend as much jack.

I bought some a few weeks ago, just got them and used them yesterday. Mine did not come with batteries so I put fresh ones in. I had no problems with firing but I was using them in the studio very small space. I bought tem for outdoor shoots mainly until I get portable power for my strobes. At that price its hard to pass up I bought the one. with two receivers.

They can be inconsistent sometimes. If you have to absolutely get the shot, rent pocket wizards for the day. If you are shooting for portfolio development they are fine. You will miss the odd shot or two.

I have had better luck with another brand of ebay wireless trigger. I can't remember the vendor now though. I have never had a miss fire with that trigger. It was about the same price.

As a beginner photog, I actually ordered a pair for a total of $35CDN. Greenlife is the vendor that I bought it from.

I did this modification and got much better range and 100% reliability. Previously I was getting misfires.

Thanks for that, looks very easy to do!  I can't think of a situation where I would need more range than that (for me anyway).

Pocket Wizards are expensive. OTOH, they appear to last forever, and I've never had a failure to fire with a PW with a reasonably fresh battery. Also, the PW technology is built into many of the high-end packs  and also into high-end flashmeters and color temp meters like the Sekonics. Now if PW would listen to me and put a flexible mount on the things, they'd be darned near perfect.

I have two sets of the Cactus triggers. In the studio they work great, I have no complaints at all. Outside it's hit or miss. I'm thinking of trying the Cyber Sync from PCB.

For the price they are great. I bought mine just to test to light on location.

I have a section on Flickr with just the Cactus/Vivitar shots.

They can be tweaked: right-angle/removable antenna, horizontal mounting, etc. But it's all after-market, and not cheap (Michael Bass is one customizer).

Of course, similar tweaks can be done to other radio triggers as well.
