I think it's mainly a preference thing. Some photographers are ok with it, but many won't consider you if you're not one even skin tone all over.

I'll search those bathing suits... because sun block at any spf isn't going to work, I've tried that.

I litterally tan in 15minutes of being in the sun, its so sensitive. By the time summer is over, I am 20 shades darker without even trying. It use to be a blessing, now it is a downfall!

I know exactly what you are talking about. I'm the same way. I had someone suggest those suits last summer but they were expensive and I never got around to getting one

You know, in most cases i really dont care about tan lines one way or the other.  i think things like tan lines, scars and all of that are just signs of who we are as people. unless i am specifically shooting a look that requires a near perfect, unblemished body i could care less about tan lines.

If you only go to the beach to swim, get in the water, take off your clothes and swim naked.

Sensibly the only way to avoid tan lines is to be naked so you just need to find a nude beach near you.

I tend to follow the same doctrine as CLT does, with regard to tan lines.

Consider spray tans.  They go on pretty even and they're far-far-far more safe than tanning beds or the beach.

Hi Everyone,

I tried to search this in the forum search and had no luck...

I am a fine art model, so I do lots of nude shoots. I know that my tan lines dont matter when I pose for classes... but what about photoshoots?

I'm not interested in using tanning beds because it won't come out even the way I would need it too and because I get extrememly tan fast... I dont even have to try. Thus, if I use tanning beds to cover tan lines, Ill just get darker and darker and not evenly.

Does anyone know about mystic tans or what I should do???

Thanks smile
Briana

Most will tell you tan lines are a no no except in erotic work. I shoot fine art nudes and I love tine lines...and other "imperfections" that make the images more "human". All personal taste...sort of like tats...some love them and some hate them on models. I just work with what the models gives me visually and try to make the best nude portraits I can.

if you dont want tannnin lines the mystic can go both ways, it doesn't get under your breasts if you tan nude but doesn't get as tan on them if you decide to tan in a bikini.

are spray tans a problem because of the "orange" look or because of the way it shows up on camera?+

I guess I'm in the minority here.

I don't in the least give two squats whether a model has tan lines or not. Its just one more thing that makes us all different, right up there w/ tattoos, facial features, hairstyle, & how they groom themselves (among many other things).

To me tan lines look more like "caught naked" than deliberately nude.  So yeah, I also dislike them on principle.

A gal booked me for some private nudes, and we had to wait 4-5 weeks for her vacation tan lines to fade.

there is a brand of bikinis that uses a special fabric that let sun tru without anyone seeing tru, so you get a full body tan without taking your clothes of.

don't remeber the name tho.

I shoot a lot of art nudes and I avoid girls with bad tan lines ---just not worth the trouble.

I also avoid those with the baked on tans ....

It's funny how this thread turned out. I started it because I wanted to know what to do about my tanlines and it turned into a thread about everyones opinion of them... not complaining, good reads none-the-less and some great advice as well. Thanks everyone!

P.S. I'm not a sun worshiper!!!!!!!

Good to know. I'm naturally tan and my skin soaks moisture well. I might try a deluted spray or experiment with something. I am brown, I never in my life have been orange, if I use too much... I'll just get dark brown and the baked look only makes me look more ethnic. I'll figure it out.

The best cover I have ever seen was from a MUA in Milwaukee who used an all over air brush application to cover the tan lines . I have used the same approach to cover tats

I think your first post sounded like an invitation for opinions.. ie, does it matter for photoshoots?

Oh I guess you are right, I didn't mean it in an offensive way, I meant it as an observation.

And Im also suprised by how many people responded! smile

Depending upon what I was shooting, tan lines may or may not be a problem. Most of the time, I don't want them in the image.

But, as you're finding out, photographers don't speak with a unified voice on this. smile

If there is a photographer that you want to work with but (s)he doesn't want tan lines, you might want to offer to hire a MUA that is experienced in blending fake-n-bake solutions (oils, sprays, whatever) so that your lighter areas match your tanned areas.

If we were to work together and you made that offer,I'd have no problems with the tan lines. I'd try to find poses that would minimize the lines further.

I grew up when Playboy was the only thing around for a teenager to ogle. ALL the models had dramatic tan lines. Creamy skin tones where the bikini used to be was NORMAL, and frankly, I miss those days... guess I'm getting old.

I have no advice re hiding tan lines; on the contrary I LOVE them and wish more models had them...maybe I should make a special casting call..  smile
