- Excessively late (I'm forgiving up to a point)
- Flake (zero tolerance)
- Major unannounced changes in looks
- Unilaterally changes the terms of the shoot:
    - Brings an escort after I've established I don't work with escorts
    - Brings her laptop so she can get all RAWs at the end of the shoot
    - Declares the shoot will have to end early so she can go out with her friends
- Totally passive and lacks any spontaneity, needs micro-direction on every pose.
- Shoots down ideas without trying them.
- Constantly stopping to take or make phone calls or texts.
- Constantly mentions her Barbizon and John Powers experience.

-And never yells, "TOP OF THE PAGE, MA!"

Dealbreakers - things that will make me pack up and leave or boot the model right out the door of the studio:

1. Showing up to a shoot with an unannounced "escort"/guest.
2. Acting like a diva or other form of a-hole.
3. Arriving completely unprepared (looking like you are still drunk from the night before, chipped nails/toes, hairy underarms/legs, etc.)
4. Flaking.  Models who flake go on the "never ever contact again" list.
5. Lying about being underage.  I don't work with models under 18 period.

For me, the way a model conducts herself as a person has a lot to do with how likely I am to work with her again or at all.

I'm Curious, why no models under 18 at all? I Mean i understand for nudes and such with the legal reasons..but for cloathed why not? as for 1-3 they won;t make it in the door, and 4) dont bother calling me my phone can ring for hours if need be,

My studio is in my house, and I'm not comfortable with a strange minor in my home, and I don't want to invite overbearing parents to the shoot, so I just work with 18+ models.  I just am not comfortable working with girls that young in any way without a parent and I'm not into having parents/hoverers around.

It just makes me a little uneasy especially with no parent present.  I don't want to be sued over a misunderstanding over a minor.  There's certainly nothing wrong with shooting with a minor, but I just prefer not to.

EDIT:  "shooting" a minor with a camera... smile

LIE about her dress size / Measurements. so I end up having a dress made that doesn't fit.  ("I can get into a size 8 " is not the same as "a size 8 fits")

Use the words “he wont let me…”   or   â€œ he would get mad if I…”

Text more than 2 or 3 times,

act like she’s better  than the other models at the shoot. I have sent models packing because of it.

It never ceases to amaze me how many things are more important to models than shooting. It's almost as if they aren't really serious smile

Once a model called at the last minute and said she had to cancel because she had to go shopping with her mother. No flake excuse has pissed me off more than that.

The only shoot which I had a terrible time in the last three years was when I showed a platinum blond a pictures that I thought would suit her, and before I could say a word her reaction was I'm not doing THAT. BTW it was a suggestion not an obligation and I'm talking about a Miles Aldridge picture from Numero>

That note set the tone.

I never force anyone to do anything. Yet the reaction was too much for me. If a model is there to create, we have to find things, not repulse one another.

So my thing is models should be able to bring something to the party, and not drop the ax at a first suggestion.

i can list more but ill shut up now lol

This pretty much covers it, with the additions of models who can't pose or strike very lackluster poses, but even more annoying is models who "over pose" doing weird unnatural poses that they think are "edgy".

Unannounced unilateral changes to shoot conditions from your model also drive me nuts such as completely changing pre agreed theme or look or shooting in a completely different genre than pre agreed.  Bringing any form of entourage without running it by me first, or even worse wanting me to shoot another member of her "group" or her boyfriend... or her kid... or her dog, without informing me before hand....  Go to Wally World if you want a family portrait.

1.  Brings escort without prior notice
2.  Answers cell phone during the shoot
3.  Arrives with red skin due to staying out in the sun too long before the shoot
4.  Does not call ahead if will be late (15 min+)
5.  "Accidentally" forgets to bring the whole amount due for the shoot - bye bye...

I'm pretty laid back - just be professional and lets have a good time!

Being late is the best you guys can do for a nightmare? DAMN! I had a girl I chose SPECIFICALLY for her hair. Shoulder length, and the most BEAUTIFUL  auburn red- which I needed to work with an apple green 1950's Dior knockoff dress. I can't link you to the photo, as I guess it would be "outing" but it's in my stylist portfolio.
I secured a location.(A cafe- so our time was SPECIFIC and limited.) A dog (and his handler, naturally). Another model. A Hair and Makeup artist. An assistant. A stylist for props and accessories.
Two days before the shoot, the model called to tell me her hair was no longer "pumpkin red" but now it was "fire engine red." I took this literally, and FREAKED! I called the makeup/hair person, and she reassured me.... "Her hair wasn't the color of pumpkins before- it won't be the color of a fire engine now. It's JUST a color name. RELAX."

WRONG!

Not only was her hair the color of a fire engine it had the texture of straw, and nothing could be done to make it any better..... She had gone and FRIED her gorgeous hair 2 days before a shoot that was to be used for ads.  I have NEVER wanted to throw a hissy fit so badly in all my life. I KNEW I had to get the shots, though, so we put her hair up- covered it with a hat- and I did what I could in photoshop later..... Although image was a HUGE success- I have since heard from other photographers she was a nightmare at their shoots, too...
PLEASE- do NOT do ANYTHING to your hair the week of your shoot..... At LEAST gives us time to replace you- if necessary!   (Trust me, if it were just her and I that day, there would have been NO photographs!)  Greg

Mis-representing their appearance.
I've had models that look nothing like their online pictures.
I had one model I hired, blonde- nice boobs
she showed up, got undress- took off her stuffed bra
went from a large c cup to a very small b cup
I was annoyed.

some additions:

beforehand - adding these bc they are a bad way to try to land a shoot to begin with

1.  Potential models who respond via casting call comments or wall tags, even when all my castings say I don't respond to casting call comments; it is completely unlikely I will respond unless you are basically Isabeli Fontana.
2.  Potential models who fail to convey all the information I request in the casting call
3.  Potential models who respond with two words to a message/email full of questions
4.  Potential models who don't know what bad retouching looks like and have a portfolio full of pictures that say nothing about what they look like

during:

1.  All of the stuff mentioned by others here, especially about being on time.
2.  Models who complain about how late they stayed out the night before; I would hope they wouldn't do that the night before a shoot, but i certainly don't want to hear about it.
3.  Models who flail and dance around when you tell them to add movement to their posing (which is different than when i ask them to flail and dance around); I'm not generally looking for candids.
4.  Models who have no curiosity for their craft or their bodies; as a director of mine always used to say, "never repeat; always explore."
5.  Models who don't understand what they need at a shoot to keep themselves happy (eg. if you know you're going to become a nightmare if you don't eat, bring a snack you like; and don't be ungrateful for what i offer.  also, bring a toothbrush.)

after:
1.  models who want more photos than we've agreed upon and/or in formats i don't give out.
2.  models who never say "thank you" (or respond at all) after i send them the final work; it is *shocking* the percentage of people this describes.
3.  models who then, especially after number 2, try to add me on facebook.

rant over.
