Retouching technique used on POTD winning shot Pt2
Hi Gang, A few weeks ago I started a thread that eventually got closed cause people were upset it smelled too much of SPAM. The video walks retouchers through the post-processing used on this shot. As I had promised, I was going to share the video from Gry's DVD series - and here it is on Vimeo. Just took us a few weeks to get everything ready. Mods have pre-approved this post. Let me know your thoughts - and hopefully people find it useful. Cheers, Derek Cooper Photography www.derekcooper.com Sep 06 10 06:24 am Link Thanks for posting this Derek, it was a great watch - exceptional production quality from the Vimeo stream. OOC, does the full video series go through the rest of the work she did on that image, or is this the extent to which she shows her work on it? Thanks again! I've been using the Liquefy tool, but I'll be using Warp a lot more in the near future. Sep 06 10 09:24 am Link Jerry Bennett wrote: FWIW, Liquify, Warp, and Puppet Warp all do basically the same thing. Liquify just gives you the finest level of control, consequently allowing you to screw up detail the worst . Working on a smaller copy of the image, saving the mesh, and applying it to the full-size is probably the best way of getting its interface without risking detail destruction. Sep 06 10 10:14 am Link Derek, when will Gry's e-book on retouching, version Photoshop CS5, come out? Sep 06 10 04:10 pm Link Wilde One wrote: Not sure actually - she didn't mention it to me. Sorry! Sep 06 10 06:27 pm Link Great video and shot! Sep 12 10 04:48 pm Link Thats one way to go about it I suppose. Odd really there is no set way to use photoshop of the final product is the same, but I wouldn't have gone about it the same way she did. Sep 13 10 12:41 pm Link SRB Photo wrote: Yeah, that's what she must have meant. While I was watching the video, I had wished she'd gone into more detail about the different way that liquify handles the "pushing" of pixels over the other tools, but you must be right; she doesn't like how it's easier to mess up the detail. Sep 19 10 12:45 am Link "Gunna this... gunna that..." What a complete waste of your life. If the picture wasn't "taken correctly" in the first place, let it be! I'm all for retouching but this is absurd. Sep 19 10 02:40 am Link SMT-Photos wrote: No matter how well an image is photographed, they can all be enhanced and improved. Oct 15 10 07:28 am Link I saw this short tutorial on Her website http://www.grygarness.com/dvds/beauty-r … ng-dvd.htm She is very good with Photoshop kinda my style technical. And I think that Her DVD is affordable for everyone. Oct 15 10 09:35 am Link Thanks for the video. Oct 15 10 09:41 am Link Nice real-world demonstration of the new tools in CS5. Adobe demonstrates with images specifically meant to showcase a feature working perfectly. But there's honesty in an example such as this, however. Altogether, well done. Oct 15 10 10:25 am Link I haven't watched the DVDs as of yet, but I will. I've long been a fan of Gry's work (obviously) and using real-world examples is excellent. At what point do people think the artistry of photography ends and the artistry of retouching begins? Of course, post can't make a terrible shot look great, but the balance is intriguing. Oct 16 10 07:28 am Link Tog wrote: I totally Agree..Thats why i stopped watching after she said here is what i did ahead of time. And it was never discussed..So its left out alot of important stuff. So why post a How-To Video if you cant discuss the whole thing. Oct 16 10 07:42 am Link Page Photography inc wrote: Beginner Oct 16 10 07:51 am Link

Oct 16 10 02:13 pm Link I just got Gry's dvd's in the mail a couple days ago. I'm still working through Natalia's dvd's but have a watched a few of the tutorials. I'm really looking forward to studying them in depth. Oct 16 10 08:07 pm Link Ruben Vasquez wrote: Let us know what you think of the DVDs Ruben once you get a chance to watch them. I think there is something like 14 hours of content!!! Unreal. Oct 17 10 09:48 am Link Derek Cooper wrote: You aint kidding! Both Natalia's and Gry's are quite in depth but go over the various material in very different ways. Besides simply watching the dvd's, I plan on retouching the image prior to the tutorial, while watching the tutorial and then once more after to see just how well I was able to absorb the material. Not too sure if any one really cares but I can do a write up on the experiance if you like. Oct 17 10 01:25 pm Link Ruben Vasquez wrote: Sounds cool - go for it and let us see when you're ready! Oct 17 10 02:13 pm Link How did it go Ruben? Dec 23 10 05:27 pm Link dklee studio photo wrote: Not really. The important thing is the workflow and attention to the detail. You could do all that without puppet warp and using imagedoctor plug-ins. Dec 23 10 06:15 pm Link SRB Photo wrote: Yeah, there's something about liquify that just works well with the body.
