Hi Gang,

A few weeks ago I started a thread that eventually got closed cause people were upset it smelled too much of SPAM.

The video walks retouchers through the post-processing used on this shot.

https://photos.modelmayhem.com/potd/entrants/090830/potd-090830-103568-big.jpg

As I had promised, I was going to share the video from Gry's DVD series - and here it is on Vimeo. Just took us a few weeks to get everything ready. Mods have pre-approved this post.

Let me know your thoughts - and hopefully people find it useful.

Cheers,

Thanks for posting this Derek, it was a great watch - exceptional production quality from the Vimeo stream.

OOC, does the full video series go through the rest of the work she did on that image, or is this the extent to which she shows her work on it?

Thanks again!

+1 on this.

Why is it every time someone goes through the effort to put up an instructional video (and kudos to those who do), it always starts with, "I did some work ahead of time that we won't talk about" that always contains the bits I'm interested in....?

Excellent video.  I was just going to start working on puppet warp today.  Thanks.

I'm not sure, actually. I'll ask Gry and report back.

Hey, you checked and let us know - there's no sense complaining about honest (and free) information!

Thank you again.

Nice! Thank you! I've been using the Liquefy tool, but I'll be using Warp a lot more in the near future.

FWIW, Liquify, Warp, and Puppet Warp all do basically the same thing.  Liquify just gives you the finest level of control, consequently allowing you to screw up detail the worst smile.  Working on a smaller copy of the image, saving the mesh, and applying it to the full-size is probably the best way of getting its interface without risking detail destruction.

Or just use the other tools smile.

Derek, when will Gry's e-book on retouching, version Photoshop CS5, come out?

Thats one way to go about it I suppose. Odd really there is no set way to use photoshop of the final product is the same, but I wouldn't have gone about it the same way she did.

Yeah, that's what she must have meant. While I was watching the video, I had wished she'd gone into more detail about the different way that liquify handles the "pushing" of pixels over the other tools, but you must be right; she doesn't like how it's easier to mess up the detail.

Great video, thanks for sharing Derek.

What a complete waste of your life.  If the picture wasn't "taken correctly" in the first place, let it be!  I'm all for retouching but this is absurd.

No matter how well an image is photographed, they can all be enhanced and improved. Even the finest diamonds need to be polished.

Totally agree Ruben!

Glad people are enjoying the video - I watched it and was amazed to see how much effort goes into the post work on our shoots. It's amazing - and lovely.

Nice real-world demonstration of the new tools in CS5.  Adobe demonstrates with images specifically meant to showcase a feature working perfectly.  But there's honesty in an example such as this, however.

Altogether, well done.

I haven't watched the DVDs as of yet, but I will. I've long been a fan of Gry's work (obviously) and using real-world examples is excellent.

At what point do people think the artistry of photography ends and the artistry of retouching begins? Of course, post can't make a terrible shot look great, but the balance is intriguing.

I totally Agree..Thats why i stopped watching after she said here is what i did ahead of time. And it was never discussed..So its left out alot of important stuff. So why post a How-To Video if you cant discuss the whole thing.

Beginner
Intermediate
Advance

...take your pick. If someone wanted to explain every little detail, the video would be 3+ hours long. Lucky there are more video tutorials on the market, than it ever was in the past. And that number is growing. Dose that answers your question?

What stuff ahead of time would be of interest to you Page?

Really all we did was some toning work - colour tones, not body toning. Pretty basic hue / sat moves. Nothing terribly exciting.

Does that help?

Let us know what you think of the DVDs Ruben once you get a chance to watch them. I think there is something like 14 hours of content!!! Unreal.

You aint kidding! Both Natalia's and Gry's are quite in depth but go over the various material in very different ways. Besides simply watching the dvd's, I plan on retouching the image prior to the tutorial, while watching the tutorial and then once more after to see just how well I was able to absorb the material. Not too sure if any one really cares but I can do a write up on the experiance if you like.

Not really. The important thing is the workflow and attention to the detail. You could do all that without puppet warp and using imagedoctor plug-ins.

Great video though. Always useful to watch excellent people at work.

Yeah, there's something about liquify that just works well with the body. Maybe 'cause it's round?
