Got this email today, i couldnt locate their website using google. What do you think???

Hi

My name is Militza Smith, I am the Events Director for an up and coming Event Management Company Signature Touch.

At Signature Touch we specialise in sourcing and creating large group events for our members to take part in. These events can vary from Weddings and Corporate events to Shop & Spa day's or weekends.

We are also providing various private group bookings for 10-15 people to participate in. These include opportunities for our members to spend the day with a make up artist like yourself, to provide a basic knowledge of how to apply make up on a day to day basis & application for evening events. Each package provided is tailored to the groups specific needs, such as a wedding, night out or a photo shoot.

If this is something that you feel you would like to be a part of can you please forward me a list of your standard pricing. This should include make up application for between 5 to 15 people. How much you charge per day. There may also be occasions where you are required for more than 1 day if you could also provide a rough estimate of how much you would charge over a 2-3 day period.

We will also require to see a small portfolio of your previous work, possibly 10-15 photo's of various looks.

Feel free to visit our web site at www.signatuetouch.co.uk

Thank you for your time I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Militza Smith

The url is missing the letter "r" in signature. It takes you to their site when you put it in.

Was a bit sceptical about sending 10 to 15 images to them...

It looks a bit scammy to me...but just be careful and research the company.  If you send them images, I'd watermark them.

They don't say you have to actually send the images they would like to see that many so you could simply send them a link to your online portfolio.

You have a website, presumably they've seen it if they contacted you. So, why do they need you to send photos?

EDIT: Oh. Here's why (from their website):

Content

You may contribute to the site in a number of different ways, including writing reviews, uploading photos, and rating other users' contributions (your "Content"). We may use your Content in a number of different ways, including displaying it on the site, reformatting it, incorporating it into advertisements and other works, creating derivative works from it, promoting it and distributing it, allowing others to do the same in connection with their own websites and media platforms ("Other Media"). As such, you hereby irrevocably grant us permission to use your Content for any purpose. You also irrevocably grant the site's users and the users of any Other Media the right to access your Content in connection with their use of the Site and any Other Media. Finally, you irrevocably waive, and cause to be waived, any claims and assertions of moral rights or attribution with respect to your Content.

For those who don't speak legal: you essentially license them the right to use the photos in any which way they please.

The problem is, and if they do decide to f*ck you with that, that the rights generally belong to the photographer, and they are the only people who can sub-license, unless otherwise specified in paperwork signed for the photo shoots.

Is this the case in the UK as well?

But in THAT case, read on - the site cleverly releases itself from liability. The contributor is the one held responsible for the content. So, if the photographer were to contest the commercial use of their images, guess who would be on the hook?

I suspect they are just content-farming, and by sending them images, you'd be implicitly giving them permission to use them as they wished. And as red flags go, the fact that the main content on the (cheap, easily created for free in minutes) site is a bunch of liability waivers... well, yes, I think it would be safest to assume this is a scam.

The email doesn't "scream" scam to me-the lady writing it seems fairly well spoken and professional. However the whole photo rights thing to me is a bit sketchy.

Personally I would respond to the email initially with my day rate and a link to my website. If she responded back that she needed actual image files sent to her I would either A) tell her that you can't without the photographers permission in writing, or B) send extremely extremely low res watermarked images. Also I would question her on the need for actual photos. If she claims to need them for promotional purposes for the site I would reiterate that you need the photographers permission. Typically anyone who is being shady would back-off at this point.

I'm confused as to why you would even reply after all the things that Liz W pointed out.

OP the first red flag is the generic email that doesn't even include your name.  Second,
if someone needs to see your work then point them in the direction of your website.

do not send them images.  tell them to go to your website if they want to see your work.

it's a scam, just a different type.  they are getting you to give them something that is not yours to give.  and when all hell breaks loose, you will be the one in trouble, not them.

Wow.. ok.. I replied because that's how I felt about the OP's original post. I'm sorry that it's not kosher in your eyes to post after someone else's opinion (even though I respect liz's very much).. I read Liz's post and was replying based on the fact the disclaimer on their website was via uploads there, not what the person emailing her had requested (meaning just because you email a person images doesn't give them usage on their site.. uploading via their site and clicking "ok" to their terms would)... even though I did agree that sending images wasn't a good idea. It was just a general piece of advice I was giving for that type of situation. Also when dealing with people like that I prefer to speak to them long enough to figure out if that is what and why they are even requesting the information from me. I'm also confused as to why you care what I posted lol.

End point is I also agree with Liz. I was replying from my iphone safari browser and perhaps didn't read everything throughly or perhaps it sounded repetitive. However, you don't need to be rude. Thanks..

I got one today too!  Let's see if we can point out the red flags:

Hello,

My name is Roland Stewart, media supervisor for Lariche Hair Cosmetics, UK. We have an up coming shoot for our new hair and body care products in your state. We have two selected models, we are looking for a reliable make up artist and nail technician to take part in the shoot. The shot will take place in three weeks time. Let me know you availability, your price, location and rates, do you charge per hour or by the assignment proper. I await your response.

*No name.
*"in your state"
*3 weeks time.  Huh?  So is this 3 fridays from today, on the thursday, saturday?  How about an actual date?
*Let me know your....location.  Um, I thought the shoot was taking place "in my state."

I also googled this and it comes up as a possible scam email from this fall.  So even if I was keeping my fingers crossed it was for real (which obviously I'm not), the "three weeks time" doesn't add up to when the other people received the email.  And, the 2 email addresses listed for my new friend Roland are gmail.com and live.com accounts  (I couldn't get the whole email to copy, just the body).  If he was really with this LaRiche (which is a real company), he'd most likely have a [email protected] address.  Even though they are getting better at grammar and lining up the right crafts, they all seem to follow this basic pattern of vague dates, locations, and seldom address you directly.  When I get real emails from prospective new clients, they always include my name, the date and location of the shoot, and usually a reference to how they found me.

Although, it's super tempting to reply to this with an outrageous rate and then send him the address of the postmaster general as my own like Mary has done.  smile

Hold on a second....let me reword....I didn't mean why you would reply to the OP, I meant why would you reply to the email.
I would NEVER imply that you or anyone else not post their opinion.  I was only asking, given what LizW mentioned about the fine print (basically giving them permission to use the images), why would you be interested in replying to the email.  I was actually interested in hearing your reasons.

I should have explained that better the first time.  Sorry, it was not my intention to be rude.

No worries, it sounds like it was a misunderstanding. Thanks for clarifying I appreciate it. Didn't mean to come across as overly defensive, I just get frustrated by the negative things that goes on in this forum especially when directed towards those just trying to give constructive advice.

That is called a "rights grab" and would put 'em on my brown-and-smelly list.

I do not know anything about the company or the offer they made you. I'm just not crazy about attempting to grab your photos that way.

I'm Just curious what is their motive? They can go on google and steal images by copying and pasting them. You can even use clipart type in models and it gives you a list of professional images that aren't watermarked. I see it all the time on flyers and websites they will have photos of celebrities that Ive seen before in  a magazine. Although, I'm convinced it has potential to be a scam I'm curious what do they really have to gain from stealing photos from makeup artists. Sounds like they put in a lot of effort to get images they can just copy and paste. I wonder whats their real motive. Has to be something deeper than getting photos.

If I have a legit gig and will be offering money, I'll just put out an open call and let the interested parties come to me. I would never go around and solicit people and ask them how much they charge. The only exception is if you are some big time celebrity, then I'll be contacting your agent, not you.

Make sense?

I got the EXACT email about a week ago!!  They sent me another one today saying that the job pays $400. They will send me a check for $1950 and I am to return the balance to someone in Japan so they can fly over here for the shoot..  That was the ultimate red flag! So I responded and said I knew this was a scam and that I will be forwarding all emails to the police.  No response back yet.
