I was thinking about this the other day.

Males can go in a suit and just blend in.

But what does a female photographer do? Pant suit? Skirt suit? You can't outshine the mother of the bride, bride, or any of the bridesmaids.

So, out of curiosity, what do you (directed at females) wear when shooting weddings?

I totally had this issue this summer!

Just started shooting weddings, and here's what I settled on:

-Extremely nice, tailored ladies dressed shorts (creased and pressed)
-white cami with lace
-black ladies suit coat
-black and white polkadot flats
-hair and makeup done

Much dressier than I would go for any other kind of assignment, but still able to work.  Also can blend in with either the wedding party or the servers (sometime you need to get to a "backstage" area and looking like you're with the servers can help).

Black dress  pants, Black blouse, Black flats. Be careful in your choice of blouse.

I wore a lace back blouse, Pretty conservative in the front it was a turtleneck  but it had black lace in the back that you could see through. Everyone kept talking about my shirt at the wedding all compliments on how much they love my blouse, but I felt weird I usually don't like the attention on me since it's supposed to be on the bride. After that one I said I will never wear that blouse again. When at a wedding I'm supposed to be invisible.

Skirt suits and pant suits...

Depends on the location.

Try shooting a wedding in Charleston when the temp is as high as the humidity...

Skirts with no jacket work well....

NY City in Spring, I'd expect all the Photographers to be in suits of some sort.

My cousin is a Wedding Photographer and she dresses very conservative. Sometimes a Pant suit can be very "Wow" depending on how tight it is and if it accenuates what youv'e got. So even a pant suit could get you in trouble. You definately don't want all the groomsmen "checking you out" on someone's special day.

Black, tailored, slightly loose and stretchy pants always.
They have to be dressy, but they have to have stretch and be loose enough for me to move comfortably in and if I need to crouch, or lean or be on an odd angle, I don't want to risk any tearing/creasing.
I LOVE stretch bengaline for this exact reason.
It always looks dressy, it never creases, it has a slight stretch to it and it always sits nicely.

On the top half, I avoid black and white like the plague as I don't want to be confused with the wedding party. I also avoid bright colours.
I stick with neutrals. Beige, cream, grey, tan, charcoal, chocolate.
Also nothing low cut, nothing too tight (again freedom of movement) and I wear layers so no matter the situation I'm comfortable.
Never have bare upper arms/shoulders.
I wear turtlenecks, blouses, polo's and other semi-formal tops that aren't patterned or distracting to anyone.

Footwear, I have a couple of specific pairs of shoes.
Both have rubber soles and are plain black one suede (dry weather only) and one leather, both have a small heel (rubber soled so quiet to walk in) so that it's easier for me to tip toe if need be.

I try to blend in.... so I'm not noticed. But I do wear a name badge that has "Event Photographer" and my name on it.
This allows people to see that I am working and that I have a specific role.

Back when I was shooting weddings my female assistant would wear a dark business suit, usually with pants. You want to look business like and blend in with all the other people in dark suits. But you also have to be able to run around and get your work done. I would think a skirt, particularly a fitted or short skirt could be difficult.

The goal is to dress professionally while being able to become invisible and blend into the background. You want all the spotlight on those you're photographing. Your best bet is to wear a pant or skirt suit that's dressy, easy to move around in and simple. Something you would wear to an office. A black, pressed suit is usually always the best answer in situations like this. Either that or a very simple blouse with pressed bottoms (skirt or pants). Just remember to make sure your hems are long enough. Better to err on the side of modesty in cases like this.

Girls have it easy as wedding shooters. Anything works that is a dress or pants. And even flats. Guys get stuck with ties and suits which are not conducive for all the acrobatics required for wedding photography. I'd shoot them if they let me come dressed like I do for working on a movie set. Shorts, tee shirt (unless its really cold) and a cap. Done deal!
