Michigan- Why don't we have more events?
I don't know, I create my own events when I travel to MI. I don't even know my way around well, but I have an absolute blast up there! I've had maybe as high as 60 percent positive experiences shooting ordinary women whom I've just met, and approached with ideas, and have had 100 percent success at obtaining permission to use businesses and other areas for photoshoots. Other than Detroit, my experiences there were nothing at all like I had expected. KAW. Jan 24 12 01:58 pm Link July 14 I am holding a group shoot on my Hopkins farm, please join in the fun. Thx, Rick May 15 12 08:34 pm Link -Jen- wrote: wait.... did someone say spiked cocoa? May 15 12 08:37 pm Link This is not a MM event so I'm not sure if it's supposed to be on here but....... I attended this last year. There are lots of models to be shot if you attend! http://www.swmccc.org/WeekendOfPhotography.html May 19 12 09:57 pm Link I've seen teaching workshops in Pontiac and Grand Rapids, plus occasionally elsewhere. Group shoots in Lansing, Saugatuck, Port Huron, Holland, and of course DEAC in Detroit. Group shoots in Michigan are different than most places; nearly all are trade sessions where everyone pays a modest fee to cover the location and then sets up one on one shoots with whoever they choose. I don't make a lot of the Michigan events, for a variety of reasons, but there are in fact plenty. There is also CAC in Toledo, which has been every one or two months for about five years. May 20 12 10:24 am Link I know a photographer that has yearly group shoots at Lake Michigan. Then DEAC, there is also CAC in Toledo. May 21 12 06:42 pm Link we had a blast at our group shoot, looking to hold another in the GR/KZOO area soon, thank you to all who participated! Rick Jul 17 12 11:32 am Link I am having another group shoot Sept 29 on an old farm. Cost is $10 for use of land and there are plenty of things to shoot around the farm. Thx, Rick Sep 15 12 05:07 am Link I'm in Northern Michigan and its like being in isolation up here with regards to photography, I pretty much have to make do on my own. No workshops, lack of experienced photographers, not a large hobby group (I've tried putting together Meetups and such). Not a lot of experienced (or any models for that matter) I'd love to go down to Detroit for an event but the four hour drive and gas is not enticing. More beautiful than either Ohio or Indiana. I have no idea what your (Michigan's) problem is when it comes to just organizing and getting out and shooting. I lived in Grand Rapids for a year and there was nobody interested in shooting within a reasonable distance. I finally drove all the way to Ann Arbor to shoot. Since I moved away, a lot more models popped up in the area, but during that year I think I shot more car shows and animals than people. (EDIT: Jen and Fergy who are both in this thread - I'm sorry, we tried but schedules just didn't work out ) Sep 15 12 05:59 am Link TLBrown wrote: My land is in Alcona county near Harrisville which is on Lake Huron. Jun 09 13 08:05 am Link You guys have it tough. Not as many shooting months outdoors as the Golden State. You have to travel far for locations and models compared to L.A. If I travel 250 miles one way it is to a location that has the keys to the door to heaven dangling from the sky. It's that glorious out here. I haven't even come close to exploring the glory of this state. The Northern part has some stunning scenery rarely used, partly due to distance and perceived permit requirements. I didn't have to attend any group shoots to build my beastly portfolio. I have shot at the following locations: Salton Sea, Dumont Dunes, and the Malibu littoral has been my playground. I will shoot something in San Diego, but in and around San Fran is golden. Downtown L.A.: the Disney Hall on Bunker Hill is super glorious and a lot of guys shoot there. Studios are cheap here. And if you're good, other people pay for the studio! I admire your perseverance and dedication. While, I admire places like Hawaii, and Arizona, photographically, we have it all here, which is why the Motion Picture Industry set up here in Southern California. Our state may be an economic disaster with a State Government content to watch movie production and special effects move to London, but for a photographer starting out, while its a competitive market, if you have an eye, you're going to see spectacular vistas. He hosts 2, maybe 3 shoots on his 45 acre property per year. I've been to the last 3, even though they are 4 hours away). It seems that on average, no-show rate is about 5-10% for photographers and 20-25% for models, but everyone that is there seems to go home happy. Half or more of the people are regulars that keeps coming back. Jun 09 13 11:17 am Link |
