What is plus-size? Not what 90% of new models claiming to be "plus-size" believe it to be.

Not sure if you posted this thread because you don't know? Or were you only showing praise for this particular model? Does anyone else have any good examples?

I think there are many girls out there who say they want to get into "plus-size" modeling... but they don't know what it is. I think this could be useful to show not only what a plus size model IS... but also what do you call the modeling that some girls do, that does NOT count as industry "plus size"??

I know nothing about the genre, but I do get asked sometimes if I think so-and-so could get into 'plus size' modeling... and I would like to be prepared with the correct terminology for what IS plus-size, and what is it called when bigger girls model? (bigger than plus-size)

??

I posted this because of the ridiculousness of some of these descriptions.  A "plus" sized model, at least as illustrated here, is what, by any normal human standard, would be considered, well, normal, attractive.  A "normal" model is a stick compared to the average person and a "plus" model is average to a bit below average.  Outside of the fashion world, no one would point at this woman and describe her as fat.  I just thought it was bizarre that this woman should be described as "plus size."

You can't compare 'normal' and modeling size descriptions.  Getting pissed off about it isn't going to change anything.

-5'9-6'0 (unless you're Robyn Lawley, in which case you can be a little taller than the norm)
-Dress size US10+
-Proportioned, toned and healthy looking body - no outright flab.
-Slightly more busty than straight size but still in proportion (C-E cup seems to be the norm for plus size whereas straight size seems to be B-C)
-AMAZING FACE
-Good body awareness for posing etc.

This...

The article most seems to link to by Sita Mae wrote on newmodels.com is almost 6 years old. It needs a serious update. I know I am guilty of posting it somewhere myself.

In all serious it comes down to what the client wants. It isn't always the agency standard.

So really what is the answer?

I don't think you will find the answer on Model Mayhem, besides body shaming about what they think the "standard" is.

I love, love, love-love-love Robyn.  Girl can bring it.

"Plus size" is a funny one.  I was actually recommended once to try New York agencies as a plus-size model.  I first thought I was getting insulted until I found out that New York plus size is now incorporates size 8 at 5'11" -- and I'm a pants size 8 due to my hips/butt.

I was initially surprised too at the models who described themselves as plus-sized models but were typically around a size 14.

Having now read a little more I think I understand the difference between a plus-size woman and a plus-size model. The latter is what you use in fashion/clothing shoots to make the former feel better about themselves! Just as regular models are size 0 and modelling clothes aimed at more woman wearing 4/6/8/10 sizes, so it goes for larger sizes.

Honestly, I don't see much work in the fashion line for the real size 18/20/1x/2x woman - at least not as plus-size models.

It means I am a little cautious when someone contacts me as a plus-size model - it's not that I won't/can't work with a real plus-size - but now I do want to know for sure so I know what I'm working with.

Plus size in modeling and the real world are different. Regular models and regular women in the real world are different. Don't get me started on "average" sizes of women either. I took my son into his pediatrician this week and the doctor told me I was "skinny". I told him I was not and what my BMI was. I think we are all used to seeing women that don't fit in the middle.

If plus sized models are meant to make plus sized women feel better about themselves than what do regular models make regular women feel like!? The industry is backwards in many areas.

Most shops are....

1x is a size 14/16 ~ Plenty of these models are working! Because they are standard of course.

2x is a size 18/20 ~ There is work for models size 18+ in Plus Size Fashion, maybe the big agencies don't sign them, but some models are signed with someone. The get work in couture, in the US at least. I am not sure what to call these designers when it costs $$$ to buy a dress. NYC and LA seem to be the hot spots since that is where the castings are. I have seen VA and AZ too.

Just to name a few, that get work all the time it seems.
