The 747 didn't reinvent itself. Some engineers did.

Pretty great plane, though. It first rolled out my freshman year in high school. I never imagined it would still be in service by now.

Same for another Boeing product: the B-52. I maintained them back when I was in the Air Force in the '70s and even then they were considered dinosaurs. Thirty-five years later, a few are still flying.

My dad was on the engineering team that designed the front landing assembly. We had to relocate to Seattle for about 10 months in the late 1960s.

Personally, I think it's too cramped for overseas flights. 777 is much better. I expect to have a flight on the 787 in June. Really looking forward to that.

It has been said that when the last B-2 is taken to storage at Davis-Monthan AFB in 20 years, the crew will go home flying a B-52. I would say the same thing about the 787, great plane that it is. When the last one goes into storage, the crew will go home on a 747...

I think your a Year Behind...LOL

This New Livery is one of the Best. They gave it 4 new designed engines, Longer extended Fuselage, and Cargo Carrier.

The big difference between the 747 and the Airbus is that the 747 will make money!

I think that's a MUCH nicer looking plane that the original.

It pretty much looks the same as it did in 1968--just a little longer.  I was sort of hoping by now that we would be traveling in spacecraft.

The top looks a lot more elegant than the original. That's why I think it looks so much better, it's a cleaner design.

The 747 is a stroke of engineering luck. For example its hull is very solid and it can also fly on a single engine.

But it has a weak point like the Lockerbie bomb showed...

Here is the first one ever built:

Upper deck looks almost exactly the same as the OP photo. The extended upper deck option goes back to the 1970's.

The A380 is a huge step forward, and was designed to have the same impact on the market that the 747 did when it was launched. As Boeing itself has learned with the 787, building a mostly composite aircraft is really hard.

747 is still in production. Slapping new engines and a new interior - basically grafting some 787 tech on the 747 is a much safer, and faster way to improve efficiency and make dough.

And the 747's autopilot systems don't fight the pilot's taking over in unconventional flight situations.
