A model manager with rockstar energy drinks wants me to send her a candid photo of me smiling, unedited. I have two here, one with no makeup smiling taken with my cell phone, and the other from far taken with my webcam with little makeup. Which one is better, unsure what a candid photo is. Thank you!

From the dictionary:

candid- relating to or being photography of subjects acting naturally or spontaneously without being posed.

Whenever you don't know, look it up.  Takes two seconds to use the online dictionary or google.

The 2nd image is better, although I would try and redo it with a less distracting background (example: against a wall).  Your face looks better in the first image, but the top of your head is cut off.

Best of luck.

the way you look in the first one is great (very little make up)

you need a shot like that, except in better quality, with a less distracting background, less distracting clothes (like, a tanktop) and with the top of your head intact smile.

second one is also nice, but less "candid" because the hand near your face makes it look posed.

good luck with the job!

Both photos look very good, but self portraits are seldom candid.

Have a friend take the photo from a distance, use the zoom to fill the frame.

Try to look anywhere except to the camera.

You should stage your "candids" better. Make sure that you are showing what you want and not showing what you don't want shown. People observe a lot. For example, it wouldn't hurt to have an empty Rockstar in the background as product placement. Also, make sure you're wearing a decent top.

Good luck with it.

For me, a candid photo is something shot spontaneously without the subject posing or performing -and most often without explicit consent- for the camera. What this person probably meant is that he wanted to see how you look without make-up and photoshop, or at least how you normally look on any given day.

+1

unposed and without makeup, they basically want to see the "blank canvas". Have a friend take the picture, if your room is too cluttered, go outdoors (in the shade if it's very sunny).

Good luck.

Either are fine to me, but "model manager with rockstar energy drinks" has HUGE SCAM written all over it. I'm sure I've read more than one post here about scams involving that product.

But anyway, I think either picture is candid enough.

I just "Googled" rock star energy drinks, and before I was done typing, Google put up rock star energy drinks SCAM.

It is a scam being run all over the place. One Google headline says, "FBI to investigate Rock star ....

Neither is candid. A candid photograph is one taken by someone else without the subject knowing when the picture is actually taken even though the subject knows that photographs are being taken.  Having stated that, I prefer the first one.

Both are very candid, however did they simply want face? Did they want body? Do they need to see your height/proportions?

Technically neither are candids....
As for the whole "model manager" thing....sorry but I'm thinking scam!

How and where did this so called "manager" contact you? Through MM? Through FB?

You have several images in your port that are more natural, not over glammed that give me an idea of what you look like that I would not need to request additional images...

Besides, most major companies are not out lurking modeling sites sending blind emails out to girls to find models.

Technically neither is candid.  However given the context I believe what the person is looking for is a photo which represents what you'd look like walking in off the street.  Since it's for promo work I'd suggest sending something that shows a warm/friendly/inviting personality and your figure.

I'd have a simple professional headshot taken...by somebody that specializes in what the industry expects. Go easy on the makeup.

I believe number two would fit the criteria they're looking for

number one has to much makeup

the whole point of sending unedited/natural pictures (photographers and agencies called them polaroids - more so in the past cause they actually were polaroids taken with a polaroid camera) is so they can see what you look like with no touch ups, no gimmicks, no makeup, no bells or whistles

the candid part is just this persons's way of describing a nice unforced smile so they can judge if you look like you would fit in to their team

facebook posing or pouting will find you in the trash/deleted folder cause you don't come across approachable or a customer/public friendly person

Neither are candids by the true definition.

But I suspect the person requesting doesn't really want a candid, but rather an unretouched snapshot. The terms are, though not technically correct, often used interchangeably.

With that said, I wouldn't submit either. Snapshots are one thing...webcam stills are another.

This is more of what they're looking for. Headshot, full body, different angles would be nice to provide. But a simple "polaroid" would suffice. Nobody wants to see someone in front of their computer in a hoodie. Great for FB...not appropriate for client presentation.

Neither is even remotely candid.

Best way to get a quick-and-dirty candid? Get a friend to hold the camera at arm's length. Have a conversation with that person and ignore the camera. Have that person snap a few shots when you're in an animated part of the conversation and you're not expecting the shot.

In the true sense neither is a candid, these are more self-snapshots. Candid means the main element is the unawareness of being photographed in a totally natural state of going about your day.

Neither shot is candid.  Someone else needs to take them to be called candid.
These are self portrait snapshots.
