Studio cubes?
I'm sorry if the tittle baffled you but I have no idea what they are called and being a total girl I'm just going with the obvious, so jump to the links below for reference pics. So, what are they called? Where do I get one? Can I DIY it? Thanks for the help! https://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/20236904 https://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/22214817 Feb 03 13 04:27 am Link Feb 03 13 04:49 am Link In North America they are called Apple Boxes. or Crates. The real ones are made so they stack. There are many sizes. Me I just used a old kitchen cabinet I found and used a router to round the corners. And a Google search gives this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1 … s_Set.html Feb 03 13 10:02 am Link I went BIY. used old speakers. they come in all sorts of huge sizes. people are always getting rid of them. get the black ones. paint them white if you prefer. corners come pre rounded on many. Feb 03 13 10:40 am Link if you dont have the skills to make one find a local cabinet maker. leave one side open so you can nest them or use them for storage, tell him you will sand and paint them if it gives you a better price, remind him to keep them light, 1/2" ac plywood should do. i like the idea of something from ikea Feb 03 13 12:18 pm Link robert christopher wrote: This is a practical way to do it. I made mine (red dice) myself, out of 1/4 inch MFD with 3/4X3/4 pine reinforcements in the inside corners. Feb 03 13 12:31 pm Link I made the ones you see here from 12" sonotubes and MDF for the caps http://gmbacciphotography.smugmug.com/F … &k=zRLTffh Feb 03 13 02:37 pm Link i had a local handyman make me three from MDF for £50 - and he painted them! https://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/31438527 Feb 03 13 02:47 pm Link Creative Image wrote: Sorry, but no. I had a pair of old Bose 501 speakers from the 90's that were built like tanks. They've been used as nightstands, end tables, posing cubes. I think at one point I even used one as a standalone cutting block. Feb 03 13 03:01 pm Link Neil Snape wrote: Sorry but I have to agree with the earlier poster. Set cubes and apple boxes are not the same thing. Similar to some degree, but hardly interchangable Feb 03 13 03:17 pm Link Hero Foto wrote: Whats sweeter is, I can drive there in 45 minutes! Feb 03 13 03:28 pm Link Thanks guys, you were all a great help! My concern about making one was the choice of material - it seems to me plywood would not hold its shape if used for sitting, and MDF may be a little too heavy? AVD AlphaDuctions that is a brilliant idea! I'm so going to start looking for one! Reinforcing the corners with small corner brackets would be a good idea. Feb 03 13 05:55 pm Link I want a translucent white one too! On a film set, if the DP asks for an apple box to support a light or a leg of a stand and you hand him a painted cube from the prop department they'd either laugh at your or fire you. Feb 04 13 12:33 pm Link "start of the apple box vs set cube wars, it was ...." and this is why i use speakers. nobody argues about if it's a speaker or not. Here in Canada, the only nuance is we have both English speakers and French speakers but aside from that... Feb 04 13 12:41 pm Link Barely StL wrote: Sounds good, thanks! Feb 06 13 10:43 am Link |
