Ok, so I've updated my port based on critique quite a few times now.

The first time, I didn't have enough variation in my work.
So I added some more stuff with different themes.

Then I got told I had too many differently themed images, no real overall theme.
So I stuck to the darker arty theme.

Then I get told that my images are all too similar, and don't show much in terms of clean, clear, studio photography.

SO. Now I have tried to create a divide in my portfolio. Along the top row I have a series of images that I feel fit under 'normal' studio photography.
Along the bottom I have the more dark, arty photos I enjoy taking and working on.

So my question is this...

Would you consider working with me, based on what I have up now?
and why? If you have time for that too.
I much prefer constructive criticism to a straight out 'No'

I don't have a problem with all that stuff above, too much of one thing.. Blah blah..
I think your photos in general just aren't cutting it.
Perhaps better lighting methods, composition, styling and posing from models.
Get your hands on MUA, and stylist..

+1 smile
on a side note: the darker art shoot has a good concept. IMHO, the execution and post processing part that is lacking.

The bigger question is, what do you want from yourself?

The hell with anyone else. smile

You only have 12 images, and 4 of them are of the same model- makes your port feel boring and redundant.

I'm not a fan of the costume stuff and all the superbright colors, it just looks cheesy to me.  The costume images feel out of place in the middle of all the portraits/normal stuff.  I think as long you have those posted, your port's going to feel a bit awkward and confusing.  I would recommend removing them, or at the very least, putting them in a specific folder that separates them from the rest of your work.  You could also make a different port for costume/cosplay/digital art/dark themed stuff.

You'll never please everyone, no matter what your profile looks like. just try to find a line on how much you should agree with someone and remember that not everyone thinks the same.

Also your photography isn't much glamour, since most people on here just look for that, they are going to judge you straight away cause of that.

I had a quick look at your port. someone here mentioned that using the same model more than once is boring, I think that's bs. I think using the same model from the same shoot is boring, but using the same model from different shoots is perfectly fine! A lot of professionals had a muse that they used constantly for everything.

https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/130225/05/512b68f2ba74b_m.jpg I'm not a fan of this picture. Her hair looks a mess, and she doesn't look very happy to be in front of the camera. Also the top pic on it doesn't flatter her body much, and the bottom one doesn't show any shape on her body at all because of the crop

This one is okay but its a bit boxy. shoulders completely horizontal and flat to the camera, and she's also slouched.

Now onto another note

This is one of your better ones. It shows your creativity and skill to produce a clean photo to show off a model, not too much editing and nothing getting in the way. I think it's your best pic.

I also like this cut, shows some nice angles and all the pics are decent

Other than that, group all the costume ones together.

Some of your pictures show great potential. You should get a few more models onto your portfolio, of different sizes. The more different models you make look great, the more different people will want you!!

All these photographers and models have a lot more experience than I do, so, I would take their advice first and foremost.
Although, In my opinion I view a portfolio much like a resume, you're presenting to your "clientele" whether it be models looking to shoot with you or commercial owners looking to book you to shoot a catalogue, how well you can handle different situations and the quality of work you produce when you face certain subjects, models, and creative styling. If your portfolio has 2 models and 40 images, you're conveying you can shoot 2 models very well but what's going to happen when you face model with more curvature or who is as thin as a stick. If you have 200 different models but all with the same backdrop and identical lighting, you're conveying you can work with multiple models but your creativity is limited.

Think of it as though you were hiring you. Would the pictures you have in your portfolio suffice if you were a model wanting to shoot, catalogue, high fashion, lingerie, obscure, fetish, whatever it may be.

In the end, your portfolio is a representation of your style and the work you're capable of producing. You want it to be diverse and phenomenal.

I hope this helps!

Inceptive,

Moving to Gibraltar? Wish you the best of luck with your photography there, I'm in Benidorm Spain, real difficult when you don't speak fluent Spanish.

Ok so a lot of helpful feedback here.
I was thinking of splitting my arty/dark work from my studio stuff, by creating another account for that, but wasn't sure if you were allowed two accounts?

In terms of diversity and using the same model, my main reason for that is when I had a studio, I shot mostly children or families, and so I only have port worthy photos of around 5 or 6 models that fit the MM criteria.

I'm looking to get a few more shoots in soon, so will hopefully be updating when that happens smile

I'm going to guess this is your other account lol

I see many many people here with more than one account. I don't remember it being a problem, it states on the contests that people with more than one account are not allowed to vote with more than one of their accounts.. or something along those lines

Edit: Gibraltar is a British colony, and the first language there is English wink so hopefully I should be ok haha. It might only be a year anyway depending on how it goes.

Yeah that is, but I once had two photography accounts (I had a personnal one and one for my studio) , but because they were both in the same name I was contacted by mods to choose one and delete the other. Don't know if the rules have changed now or not, this was 2 years ago.

Easiest thing I'm guessing is to ask a mod. I just had a quick look through the rules, and i see things about having 2 accounts but nothing about 2 photography accounts

you need to shoot some more and test with other talent..
try window light that has some direction to it..
don't be afraid of the shadow areas either.

this needs to go, I think

https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/130221/11/51267901a5a18_m.jpg

but the thing is also that once you remove that, you have a very small and basic portfolio left. now I don't know what your portfolio looked like before, and maybe "small and basic" is a big improvement. I think the quality of what is left is certainly okay, there's just very little of it. So shoot some more, and keep the quality up. You are only as strong as your weakest picture.

EDIT just saw you prefer to shoot dark and moody yourself. ah. well, I personaly really don't like that, but if that's what you want to shoot, then have those in your portfolio. It's just the dark artsy stuff and the clean studiostuff together that makes no sense and gives your port a very chaotic impression.

I think you misunderstood what the mod told you, you are more then welcome to create a 2nd photography account..or a 3rd one even...we don't have any restrictions on that.

What I want from you is some nice art nudes, b&w, natural light, modest, dignified and well-crafted. Is there some reason you wish to know this?

Right.

Is it now more appealing?

Hi Scott...
I don't think you'll ever get 'it' right if you are trying to please everyone else..!!
To me, your port looks like everyone else's..just like heads shots, etc, (which to me are kind of boring...again, that is to ME)...YOU have to decide what is your *Passion* to shoot and do that...what I don't see in your port....is *Your* passion..!!..Work on that and you will have a Great portfolio..!!...Every time you ask, you will get a hundred different responses, so if I were you...follow your heart and your gut and do what you want to and don't worry about the rest..!!

Daniel,

Port looks good. You seem to be good working with talent - I can see it in their facial expressions. They have fun working with you; age and personality make a difference. Many folks on here produce excellent technical work, except it is clear in their models' expressions that they'd rather be somewhere else doing something else.

So this is your advantage - press it! Get in the models' faces, get them to do more interesting stuff. Jump over you, crawl under you, or simply reveal more of themselves.

A lot of your lighting is pretty flat - it works OK on images that have a lot of texture and grit such as Julian's photo. I would say for your "crisp" looking photos, try to make key light more prominent, allow more shadow on the other side of the face (like on your self-portrait) and don't let the background light bleed so much onto the model.

In terms of multiple accounts: don't do it; it will fracture your work and is a poor substitute for getting your work in focus and then taking it in a cohesive, well considered direction.

Wow, thanks a lot. I think the reason for that (models looking like they're enjoying it) is because most of my portfolio is people I am friends with, the blonde girl Lauren and short haired girl Bonnie are the only two that have llamaled before. Hopefully getting a few more shoots in over the next two months, so will update my port based on that.
I'll work on my use of lighting and shadows, and I think the reason the white bleeds on to the llamas in some photos was because I actually used a 7ft lightbox as he backdrop to some photos, which looking back, might not have been such a good idea tongue
