I was in a park shooting with a model when an elderly man came up and demanded that I stop harassing the wildlife. I kept apologizing, and explaining I wasn't trying to bother any animals. He just kept repeating it, until finally gesturing towards my model. "Her" After I finally understood he was talking about my subject, he laughed hysterically for several minutes, then tottered off, still coughing laughter until he was gone.

"Do you fuck your models?" earned a head-tilt and a long stare over my eyeglasses.

I've gotten some intentionally nasty comments from models I declined to work with.

Other than that, I field more innocently clumsy comments than actual rudeness. "That's a nice camera. I bet it takes good pictures."

A passerby while shooting a location shoot called out and expressed his feelings about my photography. Hey buddy are you in it for the Ass and Tits or are you a real photographer. I responded back with. Ask your mother she gave me a years worth of Ass and Tits my son.

I rarely show my portfolio to people outside of the industry.

"Is that you?"

No dumbass, I made an entire book with another woman in there to impress people.
It's always the same insecure drone thinking they're getting a backhanded compliment over me.

It comes from the same place - unattractive women who try to find fault with you and shine a big floodlight on something that doesn't exist to placate the big gaping hole which is their self-esteem.

Some go for the jugular with baseless cheap shots.
The greater inept go for boob/penis size.

Same theorem as:

"Anyone could be a model with a pro photographer, makeup and lighting."

Forget about being photogenic (some goodlooking people are not)
Having good bone structure & features
Good skin
Experience with posing/facial expressions
Keeping fit
Emoting effectively
Knowing your genre and working it

Unfortunately women judge other women on their appearance first.
If they feel threatened by it, out comes the bitch bat.

Some random grumpy old man that I'd been serving drinks to all night grunted 'my niece is more attractive then you' with no particular provocation.

A lot of times at work people believe I'm giving them a fake name which gives them full rights to say how boring and old my name is. Even though it legitimately is my real name.. (not used on this account)

About four years ago, I was in L.A. in a nice cafe with a model. A stranger walked up and saw the photo I taken on her lap top. the stranger gave the photo a title/name.
About a week later I posted it (the photo) on model mayhem with the title.
Ladytron..
Shortly afterward, I got a comment saying
"What does that have to do with ladytron? It has nothing to do with ladytron. Thats stupid, why call it ladytron?"
This guy must have thought of the band ladytron..
Anyway he went on to leave more rude comments.
I kept the picture up for about six months... Until it was time to add new ones..

On that stranger who gave the photo a name/title........
It was Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music, when he saw the pic he pointed (and by the way I did not know who he was some called him away saying "Phil"..)
and said "I call it ladytron, very nice" and walked away..
Some girl who worked there said "Thats the guy from Roxy Music..

and the guy who said me giving the title "lady tron" to the photo was stupid and nothing to do with lady tron..
Well.... your an idiot..........if you only knew......

Who's Ladytron?
I guess I'm too old.

Who's Roxy Music?
I guess I'm too young.

I got this email on my facebook fan page about the image I used as my header. It was sent by a model in Russia. This is the email cut and pasted:

there's something about this photo that bothers me. I don't know what it is but it's really annoying of a photo and I'm a bit surprised that you would use a picture of a car instead of a model considerng you are a photographer. Would you please take it down? Thanks.

I responded asking what part about the photo bothered her so much and she responded with, "My email was a mistake."

WTF?

I get something similar sometimes when showing people my business card, which has an image from my portfolio on it.

"Is that one of your photos?"

No, I'm using another photographer's work to fool you into hiring me.  I don't even own a camera.

Not saying you'd do it, but I've seen enough photographers use someone else's photos to get a job. Enough to know that "Is that one of your photos?" is not always an unreasonable query.

The rudest comment I ever got was from an old man who came up to me outside a shop while I was with my 2 year old cousin and told me that I clearly only dress her to match my hair and how horrible I must be, what a 'poor child' she is. A million other things but he was speaking out the hole in his back so I stopped listening. I had bright pink hair at the time and cousin was, you guessed it, wearing pink!

From now on I will only spent time with kids if they match my hair colour.

I received a similar comment from a gal who was told I was a photographer. She walks o Ed to me and says, "do you molest your models?" Without missing a beat , I replied, "of course I do, but it's a bit difficult when the guy's bigger than me."

I mean really, how else do you respond smile

He makes $20,000/month and he was complaining about a $500 print? Sad.

Every once in a while I'll be doing a pitch for a commercial shoot and one person always seems to be THAT guy. A million questions, always trying to trip you up or ask overly technical questions that nobody cares about, focusing on every detail when it's just a brainstorm session...basically just a pain in the ass.

It's not one rude comment, it's an entire body of work.

It used to annoy me to no end. But invariably, the person is doing it because either they "did photography" and wanted to earn brownie points by doing the project. Or they had a friend of a friend who they wanted hired and it didn't happen.

Now whenever I hear that guy in a meeting I know he's the butthurt one that will sabotage every step of the project.

One of the best bands...ever!

Ladytron is a song by Bryan Ferry, the lead singer of Roxy Music. Great solo stuff too.

I was doing some modeling years ago to get another type of experience and the photographer (TF shoot) spent a good 15 minutes talking about my face being not symmetrical because one eye is often a bit more open than the other. He kept saying repeatedly about how it bothered him and how "I'm just not *that* good at photoshop".
I know what my face looks like. I don't need you beating it into my head for 15 minutes.
Funny part- he criticized while continuing to shoot.

Similar situation. I replied, "Nothing personal, but I try to be selective, or at least choose based on a specific project." I didn't quote rates!

A few barbs were thrown (not worth repeating) at me with the intent of hurting my self-esteem. I am sure worse things were said behind my back :p

One way to prevent that is to not have "random strangers" around while you're doing shoots.

I get so many rude comments. Mainly rivals I have in the industry trying to make me mad so I over-react and they can call me out for being an asshole. I tend to just delete such comments now.

I once got told that the work I post on Facebook was nothing more than "porn for the mind".

She meant it as an insult but the more I thought on it the more it seemed like a compliment.

Worst comment here on MM..  Some bitch model once told me, "I cringed at every single cliched concept you have, which was a lot".  I now use that as a tagline for the front page announcements: 'Come cringe at all of my "cliched concepts", which are "a lot".'  Surprisingly, that attracts more comments to my pics that anything else I write!!

And then one day when using that, someone wrote me what has been the *best* comment I have ever gotten here on MM: "Whoever called your work cliché seems to misunderstand the meaning of the word. If your concept is overused to the point it's lost its meaning and efficacy, you're cliché. If your concept is used commonly--like Christmas--but you can still shoot it and turn out with something wonderful and distinct, you're talented.  This looks amazing smile "

So, bottom line: her worthless insulting comment turned into something very positive for me  wink
