I refuse to shoot any of them! I just cannot stand the " 800 meter." The "1000 meter" gets on my nerves too...But i'd photograph that race.

Cool idea for a race pic: A Nikon and a Canon at the finish line at the Kentucky Derby, both with 70-200 zoom lenses.....which wins by a nose

It would depend on what photographer is holding which camera. And then it could be more than a nose. John -- John Fisher 900 West Avenue, Suite 633 Miami Beach, Florida 33139 (305) 534-9322 http://www.johnfisher.com

You've just reminded people of some extremely unpleasant and likely traumatic experiences. If your goal is to spread happiness through humor, that's not the way to do it. If your goal is to stir things up in a "clever" way and hide behind the humor as a defense for inappropriate behavior, then props to you. If I remember correctly there's a rule against BS in the industry forums. This would probably fit better in Off Topic and probably be better received.

I'd personally shoot all races given a chance, but I can see where certain equipment would be highly desirable and/or necessary. For instance, I know someone who did some shooting at a race track (it was a motorcycle event). He went with the equipment he had at the time but was not a pro shooter. He said he met a pro shooter who loaned him a pro lens so he could get a taste of what it might be like to be a pro shooter. Well, shooting with a 50 mm f/1.8 is what he was used to (these lenses can be had for about $100 so it's relatively easy to get one). The lens the guy loaned him was 300 (maybe 4 or 500 mm ... I can't remember now) mm and I think he said f/2.8. It was big enough to need its own monopod and probably cost the guy $6-8000 ... maybe more depending on when and where he got it and what condition it was in (brand new, slightly used, etc). He said it was the most amazing lens he ever shot with (makes sense since it cost about 10x what all of his equipment combined had cost). I won't say it's necessary to have one of those to shoot races but I can see where it would be highly desirable. If you have access to this kind of equipment, I say go for it.

On a more serious note, I have stayed away from the "color" races where the runners wear white and have dyed poweder thrown on them. Way to damaging to gear!

http://youtu.be/KVN_0qvuhhw @Mikey McMichaels... If you can't make it better, you can laugh at it. Better not watch any stand up comedy, ever. Or you may perish of the trauma it may cause you or others you seem to feel strongly about. On the other hand, you could try laugh a little more, see if it improves your overall wellbeing. I'm saying this with sincerety. That last bit.

What trauma or unpleasant thoughts can possibly come from a person saying they don't want to photograph races? In terms of photographing, what's the difference between 100 and 800 meters? If this is an inappropriate forum for this, the mods will handle it by either moving or locking it. Until then, can a person have a little fun for once? Is that too much to ask?

I'm saying this with sincerety. That last bit. Sorry, but even your own post is going over your head. The way you make it better is by not tolerating ignorance. I'm not offended by it, but change doesn't happen by different demographic groups debating each other. Men aren't going to stop harassing women on the street no matter what women say or do. The only thing that will stop it is other men speaking up. It's the same with something like this. I've edited/mixed some of the biggest comedy albums of the last decade. Things that went way further than this and I have no problem with it in that context. This is not the same and you're lying to yourself if you think it is. And it's not even funny. This would get silence from a comedy audience. You're welcome to make all the personal digs at me you want, but it's not going to change the fact that it's inappropriate for this forum, it's insensitive and not funny enough to come anywhere near close to justifying the post - as if humor can justify this type of trolling. The humor here is based on upsetting people and then, surprise! Fooled you. Maybe when the mods move it, you cans ask them to retitle it so that people can add rape jokes and then you can tell all the rape survivors that they should be over it by now and they should laugh at it to improve their well being. What are you going to suggest next, laughing during the rape?

I promise it will be funny and improve my well being. Sure, what? It's too much to ask or a person can have a little fun? My main question didn't get answered, either. That was and is this: what trauma or unpleasant thoughts can possibly come from a person saying they don't want to photograph races? Yes, races can mean people with different skin colors (in a simple definition) but races can also mean exhibitions of speed and/or endurance (which is what the OP seems to be about). You are allowed to insult my portfolio until you are blue in the face if I ask for it in the critique forum. You can do it anywhere else you like, too, but you may suffer the consequences. That's your choice to make. I don't understand what that has to do with the OP not wanting to photograph races, though, even if a person thinks it's funny or not. ETA: Just for the record, I posted a thread a while ago that I entitled women shouldn't have children after 35. A person could've skipped the whole post and just read the last line and got the point: 35 children are enough, there is no need to have more. Instead, it took a person all around the world to get to that point. Someone who shall remain nameless and faceless got highly bent out of shape over it because they didn't read it (but claimed they did) and later claimed they read it but didn't understand it. When someone finally hit them with a clue by four, they finally "got it" but didn't think it was funny (which is fine) but no one else seemed to have a problem with it (once they got to the last line). That thread got locked. The point is some people have no sense of humor. Others have no appreciation for humor outside of a certain brand (or two). For those who have no humor or can't appreciate the humor a person tries bringing to the table, it seems like it would be easier to skip threads like this, but it takes all kinds. C'est la vie.

It's a public post on a public forum where everyone who is logged in (and maybe some who aren't) have every right to make a comment. Your comments weren't off topic, offensive on any level or otherwise boorish, IMO. Some people just have a problem with humor of any brand. Even if one's humor meter is miscalibrated, the OP made it clear it was an attempt at humor. If one didn't get it, doesn't appreciate it or whatever, for me that would be license to skip this thread. Instead, a comparison is made between rape and not wanting to photograph a race. I don't see the relationship and I like to think I'm pretty good at seeing relationships, even in the remotest of stretches. Carry on but don't let others rob you of your joy.

I personally thought the post was funny, but I am not a comedy audience, and I laugh at everything. I truly believe the intention was to get attention, then a laugh. No harm in that at all. And I hate shooting endurance races unless I can get a shot of the brakes glowing. Most other races are OK with me.

Intolerance, especially over a few words, is fascism, sad to say. That said, way too many races are just too gross and dirty. Like horse races.

I can see no reason to photograph a bunch of people who think turning left is a sport, give me a real auto race
