First, feel free to share your current internet speed.  But also, let us know what speed you're supposed to be getting "up to."

https://www.speedtest.net/result/3687216757.png

This is was my best result in about 10 tests.  The package I'm paying for is supposed to be "up to 105 Mbps."  So I'm getting about 30-40% of that.  Is that good enough?  I'm thinking no.

How's your internet speed?

AT&T hardwire DSL here for a mere $71/month (They did another rate hike last month.).

Can't get fiber optic speeds due to underground copper wiring, and too far from "Their switch" or whatever they call the issue.  Hence, no U-verse possible.  Plus, my internet speed - or lack of internet at times - seems based on the neighbor's watering of their lawns and burying the signal in the mud from crummy wiring connections underground.  When they patch, they tear up the lawns (One crew digs, then the splicers show up a few days later, then the diggers come back and fill it in.).  They tied my mailbox (dug up as part of "The service access hole") to a streetlight and made a pile of dirt for the mailwoman to climb up on to put mail into it, which she complained about for a couple of weeks.

Then they came back for an "Encore digging performance" when they managed to cut off the neighbor's service in the process of fixing mine.  It's all subcontracted out to various crews now and takes forever.

"The Cloud" anything here is a joke, as are 95% of Youtube videos that stall out.  Only other available ISP is cable (Don't have it. Had satellite.), and that line is wrecked under a driveway (PG&E's Ditch Witch crew threw their box across the street.) and they'd have to tear it out to get at it.  They put a manhole cover in neighbor's driveway and it sunk maybe 4" so its sort of a hazard to drive over it so I'm not leaning that way.

This is fucking unacceptable. It's going to hinder my chances of getting into a good raiding guild in the fall.

I guess that's what I get for choosing the very cheapest Internet I could find.

I actually haven't attempted to play a real game yet, because I'm taking a break, but I know it's not going to go well. Fuck.

Evidently, you don't read the fine print:
http://www.comcast.com/internet-service.html
Not all services and features available in all areas. Limited to Economy Plus service to a single outlet and requires subscription to either to XFINITY Digital TV or Voice service at regular rates. Pricing subject to change. Equipment, installation, and taxes extra. Actual speeds vary and are not guaranteed. CONSTANT GUARD™ and associated logos are trademarks or federally registered trademarks of Comcast Corporation.

Cable has always been limited by the total subscribers on the trunk, so they can't guaranty the speed to your modem. It's much different on other systems like fiber and ATT. You also must remember that the advertised speed is the theoretical raw speed, without the overhead and other factors which make the actual speed to the ethernet output lower. Typically they should get 75%-90% of the speed.

http://www.dailytech.com/FCC+Says+Avera … e19388.htm

The FCC found that the 1 percent of users who used the most data, used 25 percent of the total bandwidth.  And the top 10 percent uses 70 percent of the bandwidth.  These numbers are reflected in the disparity between the average usage -- 9 GB/month -- and the median usage -- 2 GB/month.

My low speed connection works fine, even for most streaming video. But for high bandwidth content or a few Gig uploads, I just go over to the places that have gigabit or direct access to the tier 3 backbone and it only takes a minute or two.

I did a speediest the other day but didn't screen shot the results.

I pay for 12, I get 12.  I also live in a relatively small town and don't pay much.  Its fast enough for what I do, so I'm pretty kosher with the speed.  Though I wouldn't mind faster upload speed...

Those are a little lower than the numbers that I get but I am on a package which has a 50mb download speed.  One thing though, I am on a business package, not a residential.  I think that with my package, I get a guaranteed minimum speed.   I think for the residential packages they are listed as "speeds up to."  I don't know if your package is business or residential.

real question is...how fast is the site you're connected to?

That recent archive stuff that adode put out was 894megs I think. I downloaded early in the morning and it took about 70 seconds.  I've had 100 meg files take longer

People always forget that...you can have 500mps download but you are throttled by whatever it is that  your connecting to.

Also... your 'puter matters. After I upgraded the video card in my old computer I could surf pages  a LOT fast.  2x as fast...probably 3x as fast...it just plain loaded the pages faster.

but this is what I get with comcast residential:

I was thinking clearwire, but their service seems hit and miss from the local  yelp reviews.

People often like to say "look at______ they have 2x the speed for less.

They also have 5-10x the population density  A lot easier to wire a MDU than houses.

Mine is pretty good - I'm on a recently rebuilt Comcast system with a "fiber to the node" architecture that always gives this kind of performance.

Yeah, mine is awful. It's constantly freezing on videos. I'm actually dreading going back to gaming, as much as I want to, I know it won't be the same.

There are two basic factors that govern network connection quality: response time and bandwidth.

Response time is how long it takes one packet to go from your computer to your final destination computer.

Bandwidth is how much data you can fit through the "narrowest" point in the cable.

If you chat or play games, then response time is important, use a ping function to check the response time.

If you want to download large objects, then bandwidth is more important.

The problem with web pages now is that they contain so much junk, an average of 1 to 2MB width of total data transferred with just maybe less than a hundred meaningful bytes (characters) of information relevant to what you really need.

In other words, most (commercial) web pages contain junk data that is transferred for no meaningful reason (other than perhaps ads).

You can check this by opening your network settings and look for something called statistics or number of bytes transferred.

Mark the number you have an open your favorate web page.

Check how much data you transferred after it finishes loading.

Then actually read how much text on the page was meaningful to you. (each character is 1 byte).

is that university internet? 90% of the internet is taken up by education and government, is what i heard as a rumor..then whatever is remaining is for commercial use.

Problem is, most folks don't know the difference between Mb and MB.  The companies advertise 15Mbps, and people assume MegaBytes when the reality is Mega Bits.  So the assumption is that they think they are getting 15 Mega Bytes per second.

1 Byte = 8bits.

Figure advertise a high number of mega bits because people assume the larger number must be really fast, when they don't realize that it isn't what they think.

http://www.numion.com/calculators/units.html

edit: in the link they have in the drop down mbps, I believe that is a typo as it should be Mbps.  Small "m" is Milli.

So going by A-M-P's post, 60Mbps, her speed down the pipe should be 7.5 MBps(Mega Bytes).

Damn Brian, how much you pay for this 13MBps speed?
