If you're working you need a work visa. Sounds like you'll be working, so...

Tell them you are going to a friends wedding as a guest. Period.

Period. +1 Even if you're truly shooting as a non-paid favor, you say anything other than the above, I wouldn't plan on making it. If you are indeed getting paid, I'd seriously reconsider. It's illegal and if you get caught you can kiss seeing the US goodbye for a good long while, at the very least. Actually that would be best case scenario. Can you afford fines & prison time?

If you're going to suggest someone lie to the border security you could at least give them a fighting chance. If they pack 3 bags of gear and try to say they're "just visiting" they're not going to make it into the country, they could easily be denied an attempt at entry for several years, miss the wedding, yadda yadda. OP: if you're gonna lie, lie well. Which, you would almost certainly need to do if you're going to do this event, since you're not gonna actually get issued a work visa. Just because your friend wants you to photograph their wedding doesnt mean either country thinks your eligible to do it, they want one of their own making money. If you need gear, rent it once you get there, dont try to take it with you. And hide your cards on the way back or do a remote-back up of the files. Also dont get too complex in your lying, the more detailed you get the easier it is for them to trip you up and catch you in it.

It is getting more difficult to cross the border. You may need a passport. It used to be easy.

Just don't (come or lie). But it depends on which country you are asking about, to come to the US, where we have one of the most untrained and emotionally unstable corrupt border agents in the world, I would not want to come to the US. Unless you have a powerful political family and many social followers to bring to light all the bad things that (will) happen to you here, I would not recommend coming to the US.

It is certainly OK to talk about issues relating to crossing the border but this poster is correct. The OP has deleted his original post so he is no longer looking for information. People are welcome to continue this conversation, but just bear in mind that the OP is no longer a part of the conversation.

There is no "may need" involved, even US citizens require a valid passport in their possession to re-enter the US after leaving. This includes even a simple visit to Canada for a vacation. As an option, some US states offer an enhanced drivers license which is only good for land crossings, but it verifies that you are a US citizen and takes the place of a passport under those circumstances. I doubt anything like that is available to Canadian citizens though. Plus you get to play 20 questions with the customs agents every time you cross.

I would rather renew my passport than get an enhanced driver's license. There is a model from the Czech Republic who is not coming to the US this year because of the hassle. If I had my passport renewed I could see her in Toronto. I also know of a Mexican who came here for a visit. He had proper documents but was delayed for 2 hours. I even called customs myself to speak up for him. My neighbor said that there was a big delay near Buffalo, NY when they were entering the US.

Well as the OP has obviously decided to break US Federal law it would make sense to delete the post. Not that they will need that should she get caught and prosecuted
