About Me

My interest in history satisfies the challenge of designing for believable characters. Care in the research and trajectory of the character through the play requires costuming that reflects the audience's emotional investment in the drama. When I work with a crew of set designers, we collaborate to propel theater from abstract belief into experience. Costume is central in this transformation.

Some of the stylization factors that I employ evoke elements from differing periods of time and locale. The designer Erte comes to mind as inspiration for pieces suggesting elegance or perhaps even flamboyance. Found objects often feature as elements in my designs, for example, to allow the subtle to serve as foreshadowing for a given character's travails or protagonism. They can also invite an audience to consider the contradictions of history via anachronistic found elements.

Functionality of my costume designs provides actors with the confidence of character identity and also durability for multiple runs of a given play. Actors must have the complete freedom to act.

Understanding a play allows me to attend to a costume's tone and color value, contributing to the playwright's vision of the story. When I meet a director and actor I present particular design elements based on blending the actor's personality with the characterization challenges inherent in the role for which she/he is cast. While costuming can never take the place of the importance of acting in telling the story, it is essential to the dramatic representation. My designs reflect this loyalty to the story and in that i find the nurture of creativity.
