I am a portrait artist working primarily with acrylic on canvas, available for commissioned work with clients wherever there's a post office and/or internet connection. I generally work from digital photographs.

As well as commissioned works, I also work with models to produce paintings that I keep for sale, with a digital copy of the final result being provided for the model with full rights to copy and print for portfolio use.

I do not regard my subjects as nameless objects captured on digital photographs but other people who have a part to play in the creative process and whom I would like to reasonably share the proceeds of any sales. Thus, I prefer to have an arrangement whereby the image to be painted is agreed upon by myself and the model; the model approves the painting before I make it available for sale; and the proceeds of any sales of paintings or prints are divided up between myself and the model: 60% for myself as artist, 20% for the model, and the remaining 20% to whichever of us secures the sale.

This reflects the time and effort it takes for me to produce a painting, ensure that the model's take is proportionate to the apparent market value of the work, and also gives both the model and myself an incentive to be active in promoting sales.

So, if a model has taken the time and effort to build a fan community, there's a great opportunity for them to easily make 40% of a sale; but if this is not the case, then they can still gain revenue from my own art and print sales. (And of course, if a buyer is directed to me by the model, that entitles the model to the additional 20% seller's take - even if I'm the one handling the actual transaction.)
