A Sitting with Walt Majewski by Tom Butler

This past summer, I was talking to a friend of mine who owns a small, selective gallery of contemporary art, I was intrigued by the works of Walt Majewski which were on display. A few days later, my friend called to say that Walt would be doing portraits in the gallery. I scheduled a "sitting" immediately. My session with the artist surrised me. The portrait surprised me even more. Every single person who sees it is struck immediately...not just by the remarkable physical resemblance, but by the reaw eotion and honesty that jumps off the paper. One friend said she literally had a physical reaction...like a little electric shock you get sometimes from a faulty switch...not unpleasant, but unexpected.

Walt works fast...small, quick strokes of color flow from his markers to the page in a seemingly random manner. The end result is a montage of color and form that comes together to capture not only your image, but also the aura vehind your image. Not quite photographic, but much more than a caricature, these distinctive works are unmistakably contemporary, yet timeless. Like fashion illustration or magazine cover art, these pieces don't just capture a moment, they measure an era.

Walt keeps you talking, keeps you animated, and keeps you interested...so much so that you forget you're sitting for a portrait. Perhaps the most telling compliment was from an acquaintance who has since become a close friend. "Seeing that portrait was like really seeing you for the first time."

So much for art imitating life...Walt Majewski's art magnifies life, both for the viewer and the subject.
