"Initially it seems as if David Collin’s photographs are asking us to come on a journey through time and space to a land of unbridled hedonism, decadence and frivolity… a land of Bacchus and Pan. Yet when I look at Collin’s work it slowly dawns on me this is not some far away fantasy place, this is very much about today, the prominent role desired (demanded) standards of living is playing in global political debate and the precarious nature of luxury as told through a generation that has known no other way of living.
Collin’s, a recent Curtin University graduate, utilising large format photographs that exist somewhere between Darren Sylvester and Justin Smith’s work, rescinds to a pre-Raphaelite Rococo which, as he says, playfully and theatrically document his generation. “I live in a pseudo-hedonistic society where no one goes hungry and decadence is our hobby. My generation surrounds itself with as many resources as possible in an attempt to feel affluent, and revels in the beauty of one another’s youthful bodies”.
