What I am most curious about is people. Imagine, over 7 billion people in this world and not one person is like you. You share a story that no one else can share. You have a belief system, talents, opinions, pains, losses, and triumphs that have shaped you into who you are at this very moment. My greatest goal is to capture this es- sence within a photograph. A photograph should feel like you; not look like you. It is paramount to understand this. A photograph that looks like you can be done by anyone and this is about as exciting as the shade of gray, as far as I’m concerned. You see this all the time in modern photography; certainly within the headshot realm.
My primary skill-set used during a photo session is the art of understanding and sharing empathy for another human being. Thetechnicalartofphotographyisanobviousprerequisite,butitissecondarytocreatinggoodimagery.When I photograph, I am acutely aware of each and every move made by my subject. There is a universal language spoken by every living being: it is body language, voice inflection, movement, confidence and insecurities expressed, energy, and even,thought. Iknowthissoundsalittlefaroutthere,butthisiswhatallowsmetounderstandapersoninashortperiod of time; thus allowing me to create a space of comfort for this individual so that hey can arrive at a place of being; a sort of structured candidness, if you will. Once my subject has arrived at this place of being, the culmination of two artistries- peo- pleandimagery-meet,andphotographicmagicbeginstohappen. Webegintocreatephotographsthatembodyper- sonality and spirit. There is no greater feeling of accomplishment in my line of work than to successfully encapsulate one’s truest form of self in a single frame.
