About Me

I have joined Model Mayhem to find talent for my Cinema M.F.A. thesis film. I have a few friends who have used MM with success and they recommended I look here.

My thesis film is an experimental narrative about a computer programmer that recreates romantic memories clients. As she reconstructs her client's love affair with a mysterious woman, the programmer develops an attraction for her creation and must choose between her own reality and a stranger's fantasy.

Stylistically, the film will build about some themes of memory and nostalgia that I explore in my film Yield: http://vimeo.com/30548982#at=0

Bio:
Natalie Tsui (b. 1985, Hong Kong) is an experimental filmmaker living in Oakland, California.

A queer Asian American, Natalie’s work revolves around identity, memory, and cultural hegemony. Her rhizomatic films resist linear rationalization, blurring lines between past and present, reality and artifice, right and wrong.

Her cyclical narrative, Yield, depicts a man’s conflation of present events with nostalgic remembrance. Casual Encounter documents a woman’s struggle to situate queer experience within a heteronormative culture. Doll is a stop-animation, feminist fever dream, about maintaining identity in a society that incentivizes conformity.

Natalie’s films have screened in the National Queer Arts Festival, the SF International Asian American Film Festival, and the Festival de Cannes. She is the recipient of the Fotokem Graduate Student Grant, the Leo Diner Memorial Scholarship, and the John Gutmann Award.

Natalie received her B.A. in Film Studies and English from the University of California, Berkeley and is currently completing her M.F.A. in Cinema from San Francisco State University. Her thesis work, Persistence of Memory, is an experimental science fiction about a computer programmer who falls in love with her digital creation.
