William Brand: Actor biography
William was born in Sumatra, and was a radio talk-show host and DJ in Java before
going to university in the United States. After training at Lamda, he went on to rep
seasons at Basingstoke, Farnham, and Newbury, where roles included Seymour in
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, Devenish in ANOTHER COUNTRY, and Urk in
COLD COMFORT FARM.
William was Werner Heisenberg in over 700 performances of Michael Frayn’s awardwinning
COPENHAGEN in the West End. More recently, he played Walter Sickert in
TO KILL A CANARY Kenton Theatre Henley-on-Thames, and before that could be seen
as Harry in MAMMA MIA! (Palace Theatre, Manchester and The Point, Dublin).
William is in the current BBC series WAR AND PEACE playing the Austrian Minister
of War. Other TV includes Kurt Hauser in STRIKE BACK (SKY), Chief Inspector
Galland in CROSSING LINES (Studio Canal), Dr Werner Volk in ENDEAVOUR
(ITV), Diederick Van Buren in SILENT WITNESS (BBC), Martin Stanton in LAW &
ORDER (BBC), John Trantner in A VERY SOCIAL SECRETARY (Mentorn), Kreshnik
in RED CAP (BBC), Buck in KEEN EDDIE (FOX), Frosch in DANIEL DERONDA
(BBC), The Danish Commander in HYPERDRIVE (BBC), Jan de Groot in GRANGE
HILL (BBC), and Hans Bauer in WISH ME LUCK (LWT),
William fulfilled a life’s ambition by acting with Kermit in THE MUPPETS…AGAIN,
even if it meant getting the poor frog arrested, and was seen last year in cinemas as Mr
Feldman in WOMAN IN GOLD, starring Helen Mirren and directed by Simon Curtis.
Other movie roles include Ritchie Valens in WORDS OF LOVE, Christian Rainer in
THE CARE OF TIME, and The Angry Knight in A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN
KING ARTHUR’S COURT.
Other theatre roles include, Pasha Selim ABDUCTION FROM THE SERAGLIO
(Surrey Opera), Klingemann and Prince Albert MENDELSSOHN IN SCOTLAND
(Glasgow Royal Concert Hall), Duke Piero ANTONIO'S REVENGE, (Chelsea Theatre),

On Radio 4, you could hear William recently as Jonkheer in TOMMIES. He was also
Maciek in FROM FACT TO FICTION, and Ulrich Steifel, in THE WOODEN HORSE
(both BBC Radio 4).
